I suppose if someone insulted Putin in Estonia, the law might be unenforced.

    2. Ok_Cat5020 on

Well, it’s illegal to insult anyone in Germany, ruler, or not.

In Spain, insulting the monarch is not illegal per se, but slandering them is its own penal category of slander. What is worse is that the law is comically far reaching. I’ll quote from the Penal Code, article 490.3:

*Whosoever would slander or defame the King, the Queen, or whichever of their ascendants or descendants, the Queen consort, the consort of the Queen, the Regent, any member of the regency, or the Prince or Princess of Asturias, in the exercise of their functions or with the occasion of such exercise, shall be punished with six months to two years of imprisonment if the defamation or slander were grave, or six to twelve months fine if it were light.*

For clarification: fines are defined in terms of time, with a daily quota to be set by a judge. A month in matters of law is defined as 30 days, and hence for those same affairs a year is 360 days.

    4. In which country is it legal to slap the ruler in the face? (beware there is a catch)

    5. Apart-Persimmon-38 on

Well, law wise sure, its not but if you did on public TV, Serbias president will have you arrested and possibly accused of disrupting the law and order and who knows what else.

Wait, are you sure that in Vatican City is not illegal to insult the pope?

    7. Not true for the Netherlands. In 2020 all the existing lese majeste rules were abolished. Instead the king is now protected the same way as any other civil servant.

This is a beautiful map. The French have gone a little bit further than insulting their monarchy, historically. In Belgium I think that you’d need to spit in the king’s face to get a reaction. The Germans nearly treat calling a dog a son of a bitch a crime. And the Swiss wouldn’t even realize that they’re insulting someone.

I was not aware that it was illegal in the Netherlands. Seems like I have been living on the edge all my life.

You do need to take this with a grain of salt. It’s illegal but nothing going to happen.

Several people have already been sentenced or fined for speaking out against AP.

Portugal? I’m not sure it’s illegal – I see people doing it constantly…

It’s illegal to say anything negative about Erdoğan in turkey let alone insulting him.

    14. FYI, it is illegal to insult a public official or a head of state in France, so France is only green because of a technicality.

    15. French here, it is even encouraged.
It is in the french starter pack with urge to go on strike and eating baguette … 😀

    16. Curious to color UK green, considering how many of the “not my king” people were arrested.

      Germany: illegal to insult ANYONE

Btw Andy Grote ist 1 pimmel

Completely false for The Netherlands. Insult away. Though i think most people don’t really feel the need to insult the King. He’s quite a relaxed guy.

    19. Obvious_Badger_9874 on

In Belgium it’s rarely applied. Last time it was used it was because someone was stalking the (former now) king and pernament insulting him. Guy was going down for stalking and slander but the kingslander was the sprinkel on the top given by the judge. ( the king didn’t used this as a base for the case). Our kings like their caricatures in the press.

    20. Our prime minister has issued multiple arrest warrants for his critics. And yeah, he’s a ruler by all accounts.

    21. bond0815 on

I mean here in Germany its technically illegal to *insult anyone*, as insulting anyone is a (minor ) criminal act (Beleidigng, §§ 185 ff. StGB).

Whatever qualifies as an insult or (protected) free speech is however another matter.

    22. Iam_no_Nilfgaardian on

Why would it be illegal to insult a public figure?

Especially the head of a state, whose one of the main purposes is to be insulted.

In germany you cannot insult the president, but they are neither the ruler nor the monarch.

    24. Map is false for France. A woman was sentenced by a court because she insulted the President a few years ago, she said “Macron Explosion” at a TV Camera during the Yellow Vests protests.

In Italy you couldn’t insult the heads of state, so people got creative and made deepfake pornography of Mommy Meloni

    26. HugeHomeForBoomers on

I didn’t even know Germany/Denmark had a monarch. But who cares, I’m Swedish.

    27. Quite rarely enforced tho (take a look at Italian X and Fb accs and see for urselves)

Good luck to the people of USA who can still prevent a monarchy / dictatorship where insulting the “top guy” would lead to serious legal consequences!

      No gods, no masters.

I would encourage people to insult me if I was a public servant. It’s the first sign of doing a lousy job.

In Poland you can’t insult foreign heads of state as well, which is funny when you consider that Brits can insult King Charles freely but Poles would be committing a crime
