26-year-old Mariia was rescued from the rubble of her apartment building in Kharkiv after a Russian drone strike on June 7. At the moment of impact, she was in bed when a concrete slab from the upper floor collapsed onto her.
Trapped under the slab and bed, Mariia could only move her arm and kept pleading for help. Her mother, Iryna, was beside her the whole time—trying desperately to lift the slab and put out the growing fire with her bare hands.
“I just kept trying to stop the flames so she wouldn’t suffocate,” Iryna said. “Above us was burning. Below us was burning. She was in agony, they poured water on her from all sides.”
The rescue operation lasted three hours. Mariia was eventually pulled out alive—bruised but joking with rescuers, asking for her wallet and documents. Doctors now say her condition is satisfactory.
