That’d make sense alright given the fact that it’s far cheaper to fuck off abroad: flights, accommodation and spending money – than it is to stay in a hotel for 2-3 nights here.

The cost of a pint here is a menu del dia in the south of Spain

Same reason people shop on Amazon and Temu instead of rip off local businesses. Price is right.

Let me think…
A hotel in Galway for 3 nights == a hotel in Spain / Italy / Croatia / etc for a week + flights
Difficult decision here

I wonder why nobody wants to stay here for vacations. Could it be that most hotels are now IPAS Centres, thus allowing the remaining available hotels to charge obscene rates? Could it be the non existent transport system outside of Dublin and Cork? Could it be the eye watering cost of living here? Or are we just going to blame the weather again?

There are lots of nice places in Ireland that I would love to staycation in, but I won’t at this time, because it’s become so expensive. Plus you never know what you’ll get with the weather.

When a weekend in a 4*/5* hotel is €1K+ and it pisses down with rain a fair amount of the time, of course people will go foreign.

God I hate the term “staycation”. It’s a holiday even if you don’t go abroad.
ImpressiveTicket492 on
Staycations are falling out of favour because people don’t want to get ripped off in the pissing rain.
The cheapest room available in Thurles the next two weekends is €329 for the Friday and Saturday. Fucking Thurles charging €165 per night and it’s +€16.75 pp if you want breakfast. Not to pick on Thurles, but that is an absolute joke.
Pints are €7+ in most locations. Coffee is €3.50 at least. Food has gone massively downhill across the board, but the prices are up.
We can talk about the price of business going up all we like, but it’s really hard to feel like you’re not being ripped off doing basically anything in Ireland.
Edit: Flights.ie are offering flights and 4 nights in Porto for €712 for 2 people. The same period in Thurles is €621. Like FFS.

4 days all inclusive in a 3* in Portugal for €480 or two nights in Longford for the same price.
Tough choice.
The hospitality sector has been collectively giving us the finger since Covid.

Yup, can see why. The place is a rip off. Quoted 300 euro a night for a standard hotel in Kilkenny recently. Id pay that for a 5 star hotel in London not here.

Rather than try to be competitive the hospitality sector will look for more government reductions in VAT rates and give none of the savings to the customer

It’s simply too expensive and the product is poor. It rains a lot and it’s cold but the providers have very little indoor entertainment.

We need to utilise one of the small islands off of the west coast and call it “PLEASURE ZONE X”. Fill it with off licences, SPARS and 3 star hotels. It will be a destination location for the entire population and take in billions of tax revenues.

€30 for a meal for 2 adults and 2 kids or €13 for a meal of the day with bread and water, ye Spain is a lot cheaper than Ireland. You get very little for that in Ireland nowadays. And there’s the weather, can’t really compete with that. 2 hour cheap flights, cheaper to fly to Spain that head across the country (in April and October). No wonder so many Irish people head to Spain every year.
cyberlexington on
Going to do my usual.
I can get a return flight Dublin to Suvarnabhumi for 700 euro, accommodation for ten days in a hotel with a pool, 200 euro and upwards depending on the type.
A hotel for four days in Ireland will cost me that.
The cost of a meal in Ireland will feed me for three days in Bangkok.
The beers cheaper and the weather’s better too.
Why the hell would I stay in Ireland when I have the option to go somewhere better?

It’s almost like sabotaging your tourism sector to use for IPAs applicants has a knock on effect.

I’ve lived in Ireland for almost 10 years now, and I’ve stayed overnight on a trip anywhere in Ireland only 5 times. Out of that, one was in a friend’s place, and one was when my employer paid for my accommodation. Compared to that, I travel abroad for holidays around 3 times a year, and this isn’t even to my home country or anything, just holiday destinations mostly in Europe.
Apart from this, I went to a few day trips when I first moved here on tour buses.
I want to see more of Ireland, but it’s really hard to justify spending the money and vacation time here.
My 4 year old daughter has not been outside Dublin and surrounding region here, but she’s been to 4 continents globally (again, not counting our home country).

I wanted to stay in a hotel for 2 nights probably a Monday and Tuesday and I was looking at 500-1,250…. Like that’s my months rent for sleeping in a different bed for 2 nights. It’s not feasible anymore, to just go for a quick break to refresh yourself.
uiuuauiua on
Ammm yeah cause the cost of staying in Ireland anywhere is more or equal to flights and a hotel somewhere new or with nicer weather. Not rocket science.
Was looking to stay in Dublin for two nights for a concert. Was looking to be €370-€400 just for the hotel. As if I’d ever spend that money on Dublin.
