25 years ago, I met some Flemish people but before I knew there were Flemish I thought that being from Belgium never you speak French. So I started speaking to them French and they told me in English to stop as French is the last thing they will ever speak.

Out of experience it’s something that would likely happen with a Luxembourgish native rather than a French person.

I had to go to ADEM in the past few months. French is the only national language I speak fluently (I can get around with German but not as well). I ended up talking to the employee in English (and this was in Esch, went there as a frontalier) as he preferred English over French.
