      TLDR:

Actia Nicopolis, Augustus’ City in today’s Preveza, Epirus, Greece. It means “The City of Victory” and It was founded by Octavian, foster son of Julius Ceasar, to glorify his victory against Marc Antony and Cleopatra VII Philopator of Egypt in the naval battle of Actium in 33 B.C. The next year both commited suicide in Alexandria and Octavian had his Triumph in Rome, taking the name Augustus. The date is considered the end of the Hellinistic period, the end of the SPQR and the begining of the Pax Romana.

The city lasted for almost a Milllenium as Greco-Roman city, even into the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, being one of the great Roman Cities in mainland Greece and rulling over Epirus Vetus. In the next years the whole archaeological site is to enter UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

I took the picture myself. I live close to it and I wanted to share it’s beauty and endurance. The river flows, time flows, yet remnants of the past remain.
