And while drafting legislation, how about the same for e-scooters? Legalise and regulate – create an industry that could be beneficial to the economy (building, sales, servicing etc.)

Ebikes aren’t Illegal. Where you use them may or may not be legal and is already law.
Pretty basic stuff.
Are we banning all cars because some bell ends break the law?
Sensiburner on
Right. We read those articles about lethal accidents and people being killed by these dangerous E-steps every day now.
Oh wait no that’s cars.

ebikes are a great tool that help people get out there and do some exercise when they normally wouldn’t, or commute over long distances and harsher terrain than they normally might. They make things that cargo bikes practical for a lot of people and are totally a good thing.
The shitty old mountain bike with a whopping big motor on the front wheel with a bunch of vape batteries soldered together and converted to a hand throttle, the sort normally ridden by a deliveroo idiot are, on the other hand, a terrible thing. The manner in which they are ridden is awful; flying up shared use paths at silly speeds and doing all manner of damage so its great this legislation is targeting them.
Back at easter one took out a toddler on a footpath near me with the little girl needing a load of stitches and a hospital stay.

A lot of the e-bikes that are actually illegal and dangerous have been modified by the owners, so I’m not sure how you’d ban that, apart from outright banning conversion kits.

If they want to deliver Uber eats make them peddle for it!!!!
Dependent-Library602 on
Sure. While doing that, can we also stop the sale of dangerous cars as well? Anything that looks like it’d be more at home on the streets of Houston than Bath would be a good start.

How do they know if it’s illegal and dangerous? And how about banning cars on the roads that kill people, directly and indirectly.
Sorry, i just get triggered by any anti bike posts no matter how realistic they’re because I’m pissed at the cars parked in bike lanes.

Hit the sellers and their internet market place enablers hard.
The whataboutism I’ve seen in some of the comments here is disturbing, any half decent person should want these problem bikes (i.e. the non pedal assist bikes) stopped before they become so widespread that nothing can be done. Because the more common they get the more common injuries and deaths will become.

I 100% support legislation that prevents the sale of dangerous battery packs. Cutting corners on those is lethal. As far as e-bikes are concerned though, the rise in popularity of both e-bikes and scooters is an indication that people are actively seeking out different methods of transportation. Our urban infrastructure is, in many places still car centric but these days car users are increasingly having to share the roads with other, perfectly legitimate users and the broad societal view that roads are FOR cars and everyone else is just a barely tolerated guest is going to have to be consigned to history.

They are dangerous ! Plus I have to pay tax and insurance to drive on the road so it’s also unfair .

I see why people go for these illegal unrestricted bikes. The legal ones only assist you up to 15.5 mph, and if you haven’t cycled at that speed you should know that it feels really slow. You might say to just cycle the extra speed yourself but the weight of the motor and battery make it harder than a normal bike. I think the pedal assist should be increased to 20 because that feels like you’re moving fast and may stop the people who feel they need more pace from getting these dangerous ones.

It comes down to the age old, get the police to confiscate the illegal ones. We’ve got people using illegal electric mopeds that are used by delivery riders. Police could just setup by the most popular places and stop them as they approach. But that would be effort and also numbers which the police just don’t have.

Government that took no responsibility for regulating e-bikes says that illegal e-bikes should be illegal??

How is a pedal bike with a kit on it that can go 30mph much different than a motor bike? The motor bike will probably have better brakes but other than that its basically if I get hit by a car on a pedal bike or a motorbike I’m gonna go flying either way. If I hit a person on a motor bike its probably gonna hurt the person more than if I hit them on a pedal bike with a kit as the pedal bike will weigh alot less. Its stupid, let people tax and insure them, thought we wanted more electrical vehicles than petrol/diesel, a pedal bike and a kit is a hell of alot cheaper than the cheapest electric car. Plus if they are so dangerous why the fuck can I go out and buy one, surely regulating them is a better alternative than completely banning them. And before anyone says only drug dealers and gangs use them, yeah a decent percentage probably are but so are a decent percentage of car users.

Probably easier to just kill off the delivery apps. Problem solved then.

Personally I’d welcome all electric bikes being legally classified as motorcycles. With all the legislation that comes with it (drivers license, MOT, insurance, registration plates, helmets)
They seem like really useful means of transportation. Especially for short haul delivery (deliveroo etc.). The thing is, the rides know they are already breaking the law by simply existing. I suspect this is why balaclavas are the fashion du jour for such individuals. So why not also break the law by taking a shortcut through a pedestrian ginnel, or by popping a sick wheelie to impress your mates?
Electric motorcycles being ridden responsibly by insured riders must surely be the end goal here. Politicians and law enforcement should be asking how they can achieve this.
Banning them doesn’t seem feasible, or desirable in my opinion.
kiki184 on
I agree, but the real danger, in my opinion, are the ones people make at home with a random kit bought online and no training on soldering, etc. I think those are probably the ones that catch fire.
I bought a legal one and have a massive hill on my way to work. There is minimal effort to climb that on a legal one. You do not need more power…
