      >“Anonymity is not a fundamental right,” said the EU law enforcement agency’s executive director.

Privacy is a fundamental right and is enshrined in EU law.

Isn’t A.I. going to unlock all of it pretty soon anyway?

    3. F. that authoritarian shit. The only threat to democracy here is killing private communication of citizens. With these relentless pursuits of breaking our communication I think we should consider what the worst case plan by our governments is. Here is my attempt to see what a worst case scenarion might be. If this is true, I don’t know. But it might help to understand why this topic is crucial for all free people.

We have to understand this is only a first tiny step. Their target is not to be able to only read all your messages, but also to process them and then manipulate them without the users even realizing it.

With todays language models, once you have access to all the previous private and encrypted communication of all citizens it will be possible to filter these communications and create detailed profiles including pictures and videos.

These will be filtered for unwanted opinions. In the next step communications in such groups/chats to be targeted will be manipulated. This could be done in many ways, e.g.:

-Some messages will not be delivered. You’ll just wonder why your contacts(s) no longer respond to your messages. This may isolate you from them.

-Discussions will be tainted by autogenerated responses pushing the views desired by the people behind this chat control shifting the tone in the discussions you are having with your peers and thus manipulating your opinion. In this scenario every group member will see another discussion

-Breaking up groups by destroying the communication, turning it into insults or similiar.

-Preventing the use of these communication channels for organization of opposition.

      -…

Then of course there is the option to also use such information to threaten or punish people whos opinion are not conforming to total government obedience. Suddenly you will not get any promotions, maybe rejected for loans, your kids get rejected for universities etc.

And this is of course not the only threat by legislating backdoors into communication you expect to be secure, secret and privat. Most likely the backdoor will make communication in general open to attack by other malicious actors such as other nations, corporations and criminals. Be prepared to have your messages floodded with links to suspect sites, attempts to scam you and steal your information.

Overall it will degrade our ability to communicate freely at all and thus further isolate us from society to make us easier to manipulate and rule.

Of course this would all be denounced as fear-mongering as the politicians will vow that such things will never be done as the supervision will only be used to target bad people such as terrorists, pedos, etc. And anyhow if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear, right?

Democracy is only when goverment with big techs help will know what do you like to each, how your gf boobs look and all your private opinions (especially these incorrect ones). Every other thing is literally fascism! That’s why they don’t like Telegram.

      I am not necessarily in favor for blanket “open doors” like that, but I understand what is motivating the institutions;

There are too many bad faith actors out there that use these tools to cause harms in our cities, countries; ranging from drug dealers to state sponsored criminal networks ( i am looking at you Iran and Russia).

If peoples are disapointed, don’t forget the reasons that brought us there.

The establishment, consisting mostly from corrupt people who do monkey business them self and delete SMS messages and burn evidence if being challenged , demand companies whose main product offering is privacy, to hand them over the master key?

Privacy for “them” but not for the citizens…
and they claim it’s a “threat to democracy”, and once again the majority of brainwashed will chant and repeat the same?

Before anyone think that the citizens should be “monitored”, the politicians and policy makers should be attached full monitoring, lead by example .. not gonna happen though because of “rules for thee but not for me”

EU continues to push for more and more surveillance and control of personal lives of individuals.

I guess few years of privacy was all anyone could have gotten out of empires with overreach. EU is reverting back to old days. Sad thing, the leashes and control of colonial eras are enacted to throttle EU citizens now.

Can you assholes go after the open faschists, olegarchs, and their advocates, instead of what the paranoid, the privacy wonks, and drug dealers use?

Yeah, I get it, drugs are crime and whatever, but weed hasnt overthrown democracy as far as I know.

Besides, you should go after big tech. Not make it a sidekick of law enforcement.

The chief of Europol sounds a lot like the security services of various authoritarian states who thrive on oppressing the public and punishing dissent. Coincidence?

Are they going to start opening all our letters too?
Or use devices in our homes to listen to our…. wait…

    11. ExpertPath on

Go ahead Europol. Decrypt your own messages, email, connections, etc. Show the world that you lead by example, and apply ultimate transparency in the name of democracy.

Yes, yes, Palantir has entered the chat. Maybe I should invest because well, it’s all going down this way anyways.

Do the postal services have the same responsibility, to read letters they distribute?

    14. Due-Map1518 on

Great idea, Europe has fascists in government and now politicians want to give them a backdoor to the population information.

Surely that won’t backfire on the Future.

    15. If I want to send encrypted messages, I will. I won’t be asking for permission.

If you make statements like that YOU are the risk to democracy.
