He will (hopefully) form a government with the 4 pro-EU parties:
* PSD: Social Democrat Party (traditional centre-left)
* PNL: National Liberal Party (traditional centre-right)
* USR: Save Romania Union (reformist)
* UDMR: Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (Hungarian minority party)
The negotiations for the coalition officially started on the 28th of May, after Nicușor Dan took the oath of office. There was a constitutional deadline today, the 20th of June, as that’s when the mandate of the Acting Prime Minister expires.
Given the massive ideological differences the negotiations were quite tricky and some people doubt this coalition will be able to last until the next parliamentary elections
Bolojan and PNL are center-right, not “liberal”. The party is in EPP after all.

He’s also another like-minded guy. When Merz won, Bolojan congratulated him personally. I was impressed by the pro-EU gesture.

It’s just weird to think that in the space of a few months, he has been head of one of the Legislature chambers, State and now will be the head of government.

And he wants to raise VAT on food and medicine instead of taxing wealth. He’s literally giving away the next election to the far-right!

After today’s nomination Ilie Bolojan and his cabinet will need to be confirmed by Parliament.
Ilie Bolojan is the [second most trusted politician](https://www.digi24.ro/stiri/actualitate/social/barometru-inscop-care-sunt-politicienii-care-conduc-in-topul-increderii-romanilor-3266459) in the country after Nicușor Dan. He was the mayor of Oradea between 2008-2020, then becoming the President of the Bihor County Council (Oradea is in Bihor county). Many people attribute [Oradea’s recent development](https://romania.europalibera.org/a/interviu-cu-ilie-bolojan-cum-s-a-schimbat-oradea-la-fa%C8%9B%C4%83-cu-o-jum%C4%83tate-de-miliard-de-euro/30825081.html) to his administrative reforms. At the end of 2024 he was elected to the Senate and became the President of the Senate of Romania. This meant that after the resignation of Klaus Iohannis he automatically became the Acting President of Romania. He served as Acting President between 12th of February and 26th of May 2025.

* PNL: National Liberal Party (traditional centre-right)
