    1. President Emmanuel Macron said European countries were preparing a “comprehensive negotiation offer” to put to Iran this afternoon with the aim of ending the hostilities with Israel.

Foreign ministers from the UK, France, Germany and the EU’s high representative will meet Iran’s foreign minister in Geneva on Friday afternoon, the first high-level face-to-face diplomacy with Tehran since the war began a week ago.

Macron said that the negotiations had to move towards zero uranium enrichment, the process that can yield both nuclear fuel and weapons grade material, as well as limiting Iran’s missile activity and financing of terrorist groups.

Iran has consistently refused to end enriching uranium domestically. The issue has been one of the biggest hurdles to a deal.

Before Israel launched its attack on the Islamic republic last week, Tehran had been holding indirect talks with the US in a bid to end the prolonged stand-off over its nuclear programme, but the war upended those diplomatic efforts.

What does Iran get? Security guarantees to prevent Israel attacking them?

    3. ziplock9000 on

How about. “All of the middle east remove it’s nuclear weapons and allow full access to inspectors”

      Everyone should be happy right?

Otherwise let Iran have nukes and give a few to the Palestinians.

    4. vcr_phnm on

I have a proposition for you and all Europeans. We just fucking stay out of this…

    5. ConsciousWallaby3 on

Such a deal will inevitably mean sanctions relief, which the Iranian régime will use to fund their proxies again throughout the middle east. Is that really what we want?

    6. European leadership is so pathetic.
Just let Israel finish off Iranian nuclear and pave a way for regime change. Islamic Iran is a Russia of Middle East.

    7. Murder_Bird_ on

The Iranian nuclear program is just the most legitimate justification Israel is using. The real reason they attacked was because they finally saw the opportunity to effectively destroy the Iranian regime.

-Because Hamas is so stupid they provoked a full on crushing response from Israel with the Oct. 7th attack. The morality or proportional arguments aside, Israel effectively destroyed one of the major tools Iran was using to threaten a response to any Israeli attack.

-Hezbollah decided to poke the hornets nest and Israel, in spectacular fashion, decapitated the entire organization, basically down to local group leaders. And then they destroyed much of their weapons. Hezbollah was *THE* ace in the hole for Iran against Israel and they were removed from the table.

-Syria collapsed removing an Iranian, effectively puppet state, from the board. And also drove Russia out of the region, another Iranian ally.

-The US just finished hammering the shit out of the Houthis. They didn’t wipe them out but the knocked them way back.

-a couple of months ago Iran and Israel had a back and forth. Israel, with impunity, flew into Iran and wiped out the best AD missile systems Iran had. In return Iran fired a bunch of missiles and drones at Israel that were almost completely ineffective.

The stars have aligned. Israel will never have a better opportunity to knock out Iran. In the space of two years Israel has pretty much wiped the board clean of every single major enemy they have in the region and now they have a chance to knock out the spider at the center that was supplying and financing all the the others.

The nuclear program is a legitimate threat and all the reason they need but they will never have this opportunity again. Nothing is going to make them stop short of the collapse of the Iranian regime.

Why is Iran enriching uranium we know that answer.

EU acting like they have something to say in this conflict

    10. thepostmanpat on

I propose both Israel and Iran destroy their nuclear weapons. Fair and square.

    11. whooo_me on

After Libya and Ukraine – the lesson seems to be: if you have nukes, hold on to them.

      Promises are worthless.

    12. Oh yeah. “Macron says”. Well, now all the problems will definitely be solved overnight. Now I’m calm.

    13. WingedTorch on

we should build a defensive wall between these countries as UN to unite the world with unity against killing

    14. Mammoth_Bed6657 on

This sounds like the Budapest Memorandum (which fucked Ukraine) all over again.

    15. Extreme-Athlete9860 on

r/europe: Ukraine’s biggest mistake is “giving up” on its nukes

also r/europe: non-Western countries should accept having no nukes and be okay with being regime changed by the US and its allies at will

    16. Whatcanyado420 on

As if Europe has any power to offer anything to Iran LMAO

    17. Timmiejj on

And how will Macron get Israel to agree whilst America is fully in their corner?

    18. SargnargTheHardgHarg on

Netenyahu and his cabinet are hell bent on war, only trump could possibly stop them and he won’t.
Trump wants blood, he’s a nutter

    19. Rightricket on

I don’t remember ever agreeing to be part of this. Maybe Macron should shut his mouth for once.

    20. Chuck-Finley69 on

So a sternly worded letter warning to stop or Macron is going to send another strongly worded letter.

    21. Macron acting like anyone outside of Europe cares what he and his bureaucrats say… We’ve truly become caricatures on the world stage, always just talking and regulating and it’s sad to observe…

    22. ManagerOfLove on

Who cares what Europe’s position is in this conflict? What leverage does Macron have?

    23. SamDuck159 on

These negotiations are pointless. Iran will use this for a smear campaign. Europeans diplomats will pat each other on the back because they love the attention. There is only one way to deal with the ruling radical Islamists in Iran. And Israel is an expert in this.

    24. Affectionate_Pie2241 on

Why? Is he the last one to know they supply Russia with weapons?! Just because it’s Israel bombing there?

    25. Most_Grocery4388 on

Honestly, Macron’s constant failed attempts are probably well meaning but their constant failure like with his reaching out to Putin to just be ignored, his trip to US to be ignored and his trip to China are all making the whole EU look pathetic. He is making himself a representative of Europe to the world as a power play for later EU office and these failures are making other countries look at the EU from a stronger position. It makes sense to have dialogue but he comes across like a kid who who tries to inject himself into everything with no power to influence the situation.

Like many others have pointed out, what can he possibly offer Iran that would make the war stop when Israel and US will not settle for anything short of complete surrender. He can’t possibly offer security for any faction in the mid East. So this is just proving Trump right that Macron likes feeling important.

    26. datafromravens on

There is virtually nowhere in the world that gives a shit what europe thinks or wants. Iran doesn’t have any need to make a deal with europe because they would never actually do anything about it if they just went ahead and developed a nuke.

    27. Vorschrift on

What a bullshit! Europeans still don’t get it! It’s mindblowing how Europe bows down to a brutal regime. Let the attacks go on amd let the iranian population overthrow the reegime!!

      Jin, Jiyan, Azadi!!

    28. fut_mbappe29 on

We already tried this in 2015 and it didnt work , what makes you thini it will work this time iran will never agree to zero enrichment

    29. Ok_Cauliflower_668 on

Should EU just focus on ukraine More and let the Orange man be the “strong” one In this conflict so he could be proud of himself and europe would save its resources?

    30. Littlepage3130 on

I respect how much Macron tries to influence world events, even if it’s futile.

    31. NoTown3670 on

Macron can be a real one and step forward to deal with things unlike whoever the German Chancellor is rn. He gets my respect in that regard but Israel is there, still aggressive and unreasonable.
