A lot of Italian politicians are useful idiots. That’s pure history.

“If NATO was created to guarantee peace and mutual defense, it must either become an organization that takes on this task by engaging with the Global South — and thus become something profoundly different — or we will not achieve the goal of having security within rules that apply to everyone,” he said.

      Whatever this means…

    4. Jane_Doe_32 on

Well, the guy basically acknowledges that both the UN and Europe have no role to play on the world stage, and adds that the current NATO is an outdated organization that failed to meet its objectives, urging the organization itself to reinvent itself as something more than an anti-Russia bloc and to position itself as a bloc that faces all kinds of threats at the global level.

In short, it does not seem crazy what he says, unrealistic of course, because if it is already difficult to agree on the agenda of the more than twenty countries that are part of the EU, imagine adding the rest, including the United States, but as I say, however it does not seem so much nonsense as an unattainable dream.

Number of times Soviets/Russians have invaded NATO countries: 0
Number of times Soviets/Russians have invaded non-NATO countries: More than 0

Oh Bull Shit! Europe is a huge market place, a humanitarian progressive hub, a well developed network of ethnicities and countries that wants a more peaceful world and progress in general. We still have much to learn obviously and knowing that is kind of beautiful even though we could do well by speeding up the process in some areas.

What is he? The most depressed Defense Minister in the world?

      Man needs to read more.

We need to start having big conversations around big ideas. Europe must re-invigorate it’s identity.

      > “We talk about Europe as if Europe mattered; perhaps once, it could have mattered, if it had given itself a political role that it did not give itself — if it had equipped itself with a foreign policy or defense,” he said. “But its time is over — and I say this with sadness.”

Europe is the world’s second largest economy. It contains two nuclear powers with blue water navies. Defence spending in the EU alone was €326 billion last year, giving it the world’s second largest military budget. Europe is home to a massive amount of soft power and it’s one of the world’s centres of research and development. If Europe doesn’t “matter” then no one apart from the US matters.

these goofy ahh clickbait headlines piss me off so much. from the headline you’d be led to believe the minister is some trumpist bootlicker but alas, as reading the article reveals, he makes some very good points.

I think post ww2 most if not all of Europe was rebuilding itself and decolonizing, the US with its Marshall Plan help to rebuild and assumed the power vacuum vacated by the Brits and other European. It was an opportunity for the US to flex muscle like Korea and Vietnam

    11. Isaruazar on

Yeah it does it’s a buffer zone between RU-USA. Where creates more space and also lots of obstacles before you get to bring the fight to US soil, never has war except civil war, with Mexicans, natives etc. has gotten to US

Buddy, NATO was created to guarantee peace and mutual defence among NATO countries. And currently no NATO country is under threat from the ‘global south’, it’s under threat from Russia.

Economic cooperation and diplomacy by individual countries and the EU aside, why would NATO, the **North** Atlantic Treaty Organisation, want to pivot to the global **south**?!

      The comments:

“Before, U.S. and Europe used to be the center of the world — now, there is everything else with which a relationship must be built,”

“We often talk as if we were still living 30 years ago, but everything has changed.”

“If NATO was created to guarantee peace and mutual defense, it must either become an organization that takes on this task by engaging with the Global South — and thus become something profoundly different — or we will not achieve the goal of having security within rules that apply to everyone,”

“We talk about Europe as if Europe mattered; perhaps once, it could have mattered, if it had given itself a political role that it did not give itself — if it had equipped itself with a foreign policy or defense,”

“The U.N. counts in the world as much as Europe does: nothing, less than a national team, less than China, less than India, or less than Israel,”

Guido doesn’t seem anti NATO in the Vatnik way but more in the we should do more in general and in the EU way, but still that picture doesn’t do him any favors.

OK, how would that guarantee NATO’s mutual defense?

I’d see the EU absorbing most of what NATO currently does into her own military chain of command. Setting up a pan European army that is made up out of member State armies that are more directed by the EU as to their capability requirement and equipment shortlists.

Shifting procurement towards a group buy system would really help lower cost and TCO and increase interoperability.

I dont understand why 5% all of a sudden? Since when 3% is not enough? Some countries were struggling to meet 2% and now all of a sudden they are expected to meet 5

Don’t tell us to read the article when the article just prove this guy hasn’t a clue what the purpose of NATO even is.

He is talking about the global south.

The wrong time to criticize NATO. Countries like Estonia are afraid!
