At €15 it’s still less than Aldi and that’s after four years of training to mind and educate children!

It should be part of the education system.

The system is an absolute shambles – I’d say majority opinion is that high quality childcare is a must in our society (it allows parents, predominantly mothers, the freedom to work; it gives children a structured way to socialise and learn before school; etc) but we have left it to private sector providers who are now regulated on their pricing by the state, so a lot of hassle of state regulation without any of the benefits.

Meanwhile these childcare workers – who, frankly, are mostly saints who love children and pour their hearts and souls into the work – get paid fuck all. Like, you’d get paid better in Aldi minding the fresh fruit aisle than you do minding the most precious thing any parent has, their kids.

When talk of a pay increase comes up, most parents I know say “they deserve it… but I can’t afford the fees going up.”

Childcare ought to be a state run activity, imo, with proper pay and conditions for these people doing societally important work. Of course it’ll be more expensive than it is today. But well raised kids will be a benefit to all of us in the long run.
