Il mercato automobilistico della Turchia è elettrizzante molto velocemente. Il 18% delle nuove auto vendute nel maggio 2025 era elettrica, percentuale simile alla Germania e superiore a Spagna, Italia o Grecia

people may laugh at Togg for being basic and low quality, but fact is that it has a real chance to cross 1 million sales per year by 2030

not only in Turkey, but could also expand to Azerbaijan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Indonesia and many others

also, another shame for traditional car producers like Italy,US and Japan, whose BEV market share is still in single digits, while Indonesia, Thailand, Uruguay, Turkey, Vietnam are speeding towards 20% BEV share this year

The utter crash in diesel is weird, what’s going on there?

if Turkey maintains its growth trajectory, it will go from 20% BEV share to 80% BEV share in less than 5 years

and i say growth trajectory ,not growth rate, which will slow down for sure, but trajectory refers to the S-curve shape of the transition

    4. This past year has been insane for chinese EVs. One moment they were just concepts and the next they were everywhere.

      18%?

      Those are rookie numbers.

A little edit: In Norway, 86% of all new cars in 2024 were electric, for you downvoters.

They are also building a lot of solar capacity.

I bet that many of them are buying EVs that are able for bidirectional loading. Turkey is an earthquake country and EVs are much more safe than fuel generators. You can sleep in your car for two or three days until it is safe to get back into your home.

A small thing to note is that this probably has to do with how Turkish government taxes vehicles that run on petrol or diesel. We have a running joke in Turkey where anyone who buys a car buys another one for the government. Some vehicles are taxed 150%.

Another factor is probably TOGG, the Turkish-made electric car. It is especially popular with AKP supporters since Erdogan uses it for political propaganda purposes. I am not sure if those voting for the opposition, people who are often more progressive compared to Erdogan voters, have taken an interest in TOGG. It is a possibility. It is also possible for government supporters to purchase those without subscribing to whole “green energy” mindset.

It would be interesting to see which manufacturers are taking advantage of this growing market. European, Korean, Japanese, or Chinese?

I’ve just come from Istanbul, I’ve rarely seen an electric car.

Oil imports have long been a factor in Türkiye’s trade balance issues (alongside Erdo’s poor economic choices) so a shift towards EVs and solar makes sense. The smaller that oil deficit is the better for the lira and inflation.

Love visiting Türkiye so hope this marks a positive for its economic story.

    11. – Tesla Model Y is cheaper than VW Golf.

      – TOGG has crazy financial incentives. It is not cheap, low quality car, it is just subsidized.

      – BYD, MG and Kia’s EVs are also popular.

      – I also saw some luxury brands like Mercedes, BMW and Porsche full EV models.

Still small commercial vehicles adaption is non-existent. That would be the main demand imho. They have predictable routes, they need cheap maintenance and cost of fuel. For example we need a pick-up truck for our farm but there is no EV option. All are fucking diesel. We could easily setup a solar system to do the charging. Our route is typical 100 kms a few days in a week. I’m thinking to buy a Tesla and make it pull a trailer for this route.

    12. the electrification is one thing, but I definitely also find it noteworthy how diesel went from being the most popular choice to almost irrelevant.
