If he could just be honest and stop his “there’s a clear moral cause” shite that’d be grand.

    2. Few_Masterpiece7604 on

God what has the Labour party become. Championing benefit cuts to the most vulnerable? Its nonsenical, all its going to do is push people out of work and reduce the amount of spending money individuals have.

    3. Shardonk on

This is to defend our passive rentier economy.

      LVT/Wealth taxes would fix this

    4. Greedy-Tutor3824 on

Should we close the tax loopholes on large American corporations registered in off shore tax havens… or… we could just go for the disabled? Yeah, that one sounds easier.

He was also going to press on with winter fule cuts, let’s see how this plays out.

The BBC needs to do better journalism to aid understanding of this issue and other spending issues.

They mention the reforms aim to save £5bn.

They should also show how much PIP has gone up, how much it will continue to go up by, and how much £5bn is in comparison to other spending areas and crucially what taxes would have to rise to cover this increase in cost.

I wouldn’t mind a smaller state, if it actually translated to more affordable living for working people, lower taxes, lower mortgages, lower rents. But it never does. They just cut benefits to keep on funding the super rich. Keep the rich protected and their asset prices forever skyrocketing.

We need a Georgist tax system now. It’s time.

Will there be anyone left to vote Labour at the next election? I don’t quite understand who they are trying to govern for?

    9. Sea-Caterpillar-255 on

I don’t necessarily support this change but opposing it without offering an alternative is not viable.

If you oppose this, then that’s fine but you should also say what you will do instead:

      * cut pensions (or at least make them grow less slowly) (I’d do this)

      * increases taxes on workers even more (on the same group that got hit the last few times or by taxing people on lower incomes?)

      * cut something else (what?)

Scotland alone handed out £35million in benefits for ADHD last year, absolutely insane figures. The system is clearly being exploited.

Sorry, but I just do not believe that 23% of working age adults are disabled.

We are not ruled by the colours and faces of our parties, but by the companies and people who lobby our government.
Its how left leaning parties still push policy that is “worse than the Tories”.

You know many of the companies already for they have boasted record profits through all of our recent crisis. As for the people there are a list of obvious people there too who have already been vocal on having an interest in our vote.

The sooner we acknowledge this, the better our chance to have some form of actual national security.

The conservatives weren’t willing to make difficult decisions for 15 years. Or any decisions. Just left everything to fail, until it became a problem in the press.

Whether this is wrong or right way to go about it. At least they’re trying to address a problem rather than just waiting 10 years down the line.

    13. -Incubation- on

I’ve commented this many times but the government seems to want to topple the already struggling adult social care system as since carers save the government £162b a year, those who lose PIP means that their carers will no longer qualify for Carers Allowance meaning all of their care needs will need to be dealt by the Local Authorities.

£5b of cuts, for £1b to be ‘reinvested’ to help disabled people find employment, despite the fact that PIP has nothing to do with work capability, with unemployment being over 1.1m with just 800,000 vacancies available.

We pay over £8m a day for people who then also have access to our resources such as housing, benefits, healthcare and education – perhaps we should be looking at this rather than targeting the most vulnerable in society?

Because of the absolute shit show Labour have been since being in power, they’ve left the door wide open for Reform for the next election.

Reform will end up bulldozing there way into number 10 at this rate, this isn’t the Labour I voted for.

Bro really enjoys LARP’ing as Tony Blair, doesn’t he?

    17. Crazy-Condition-8446 on

I wonder can we all agree Labour and Tories, have lost their core voting bases now.

I dont understand, why people, especially in some reddit groups, are shocked at the rise in Reform. Its not a rise in fascism, the majority of the public are wanting an alternative

    18. CrazyNeedleworker999 on

How brave. Nothing quite as challenging as punching down

    19. raven43122 on

I fully expect the pr machine to kick start the “disabled are benefit scroungers with free cars”

    20. Chat_GDP on

      They’re corrupt and clueless.

Their only idea is repackaged Toryism.

    21. I can’t believe there’s a realistic possibility that the Conservatives will save a Labour government from its own backbenchers by voting with them on a bill that cuts benefits for the most vulnerable in society. And why shouldn’t they – it’s a perfect Tory policy, they’d vote for it in a heartbeat if they were still in power.

    22. Make it a confidence vote and please collapse the government, it would be so fucking funny to see Starmer’s time as PM cut so short. Perfect justice for being a empty mouthpiece for the Blairite’s in the party.

I honestly do not care if Reform take over the government, Farage is a coward who would flee at the first chance of power and the rest are incompetants who would infight on day one.

    23. This shows they really were never ready to govern. Amateur hour

    24. Formal-Aioli5377 on

I know that the government is in a really sticky financial situation right now, but god this sucks. I’m not an economist but surely there are other things that can be cut first? This will impact not only the most vulnerable in society, but also our national resilience. Again, not an economist… I imagine this was a really rough decision to make, but there must be a better alternative even if it’s harder to find.

    25. Bridgeboy95 on

      Heres whats gonna happen

      1) “I’ll press ahead absolutely!”

(realises rebellions too big and the tories will join in to sink the bill as well to shit stir)

2 ” um maybe we could compromise!”

      (rebellion still big)

3 “we have rethought the idea and will now fully do what i always wanted to do which was the opposite of what i said before”

    26. GiftedGeordie on

As someone who’s got autism and is on benefits, I really think that I hate Starmer’s Labour as much as I hate the Conservatives and Reform; but at least the Conservatives had 14 years of mistakes and fuck ups to get that hate and Reform are run by Nigel fucking Farage.

If Starmer thinks that people like me are ‘lesser than’, then why not just stop with the *’This is for your own good’* bollocks and put us into work camps or in front of a firing squad. Just get it over with, Keir!

I also understand that Starmer is chasing the right wing vote, but you’re never going to out-Farage Farage and it’s like the political parties of this nation forget that left wing voters exist, too. Why are right wing voters apparently the only voters that fucking matter?

    27. Anima_of_a_Swordfish on

I would laugh and say how stupid this is as it will end up with them losing power. But this is what being prime minister has become in the UK. You get in, enrich yourself and your mates and then go down in scandal or lose at the next election. They don’t want to stay in power and they don’t dint care how unpopular they are. It’s all about the grift.
