He’ll raise taxes to raise defence spending to impress Daddy Trump

But he won’t raise taxes on the rich to end homelessness, child poverty or the cancer backlog.

      Self-serving, out of touch charlatan.

    2. Smeggy182 on

I thought Labour didn’t do that. This must be the new version

    3. He’s only doing this because Trump told him to. An utterly spineless and servile person.

    4. I’m not sure how much tax leeway the working class have less to tap.

    5. CastleofWamdue on

So a tax rise to pay for nore military but not to help disabled people.

Starmer really is keeping his promise to govern as a Tory.

Anyone who thinks UK Defence doesn’t need more investment needs to listen to that Wargame podcast from Sky. Just because Russia isn’t going to invade the UK doesn’t mean that they won’t attack British interests and infrastructure. They’ve already used chemical and radiological weapons on British soil and have fired missiles at British aircraft over the Black Sea.

UK undersea cables and gas supplies are certainly vulnerable to submarine attack, and this could be done discreetly.

The UK has almost no air defence against a missile or drone attack. We’d need a Type 45 Destroyer to be in the right place at the right time to be able to conduct an intercept, and only 1-2 of those are available at one time.

The RAF has some capable combat aircraft in the Typhoon and F-35B, but nowhere near enough of them. Weapon upgrades to the F-35B are proceeding far too slowly; to conduct an air-to-ground mission, the jets would be stuck dropping bombs at point-blank range as they have no glide bombs or even short range air-to-ground missiles.

The UK doesn’t have enough armaments to fight anything other than a short and sharp conflict. Currently, there’s also not enough of an industrial base to quickly replenish armaments too.

The UK’s Defence Budget is actually lower than the 2-2.5% that is advertised due to the fact that military pensions were added into the pot in recent times.

Without a powerful conventional armed forces, the risk of nuclear war is raised. If a Russian attack did cause severe damage to the UK, politicians could well be forced to choose between throwing in the towel or resorting to a nuclear strike.

      ‘Judge him after his manifesto’

‘Judge him once he’s in power’

      ‘Judge him after 5 years’

/r/ukpolitics handing the country to Reform on a silver platter.

    8. GiftedGeordie on

On the one hand, I can understand we need to raise defence spending, but on the other hand, why are the most vulnerable people having to suffer and pay the price for that hike in defence spending? Get the rich gits to pay for it!

Also, the fact he’s only doing it because Trump fucking told him to makes Starmer seem utterly fucking spineless and Trump like an absolute bully, which is probably the nicest thing you could say about the man.

    9. Logical-Brief-420 on

I’m really not sure how people can look at the world in its current state and think we don’t need to spend more on our military.

Heads buried firmly in the sand as per usual.

    10. Ill_Shirt1182 on

Stay out of other countries wars especially when one of the countries should be considered a rouge state and l do not mean Iran

    11. PoodleBoss on

Not the £8-10 mio a day on illegal economic migrants / refugees….

    12. AhoyDeerrr on

Implying he will be Labour leader going into the next election, nevermind PM.

    13. GimpyTwat on

Instead of raising taxes, just slash foreign aid. I’m so tired of working hard, being taxed, and the government throwing my money hand over fist at the rest of the world. I wish they’d spend that money on the country they’re supposed to represent.

    14. Classic_Peasant on

I’m a basic tax player but after deductions I may as well work for free 1 week in 4.

      More tax rises?

But what happened to protecting the working man?

    15. XenorVernix on

I’m all for spending more on defence, we need to. But spend my money better before you come taking more. A manifesto on further tax increases is going to hand the government to Farage.

    16. bobblebob100 on

His “hint” is not ruling them out? Like no one would when its 4 years away. The media will find anything to criticise

    17. Money is fungible. Tax rises fund all government expenditure. He needs to cut back on the huge bureaucracy and welfare state.

    18. Nipplecunt on

Tax the rich tax the rich tax the rich tax the rich tax the rich tax the rich tax the rich tax the rich tax the rich tax the rich tax the rich tax the rich

    19. Jensen1994 on

Any more tax rises and we will be welcoming the Russians as liberators

    20. smokedhaddie on

We need a revolt in Britain, these cunts have been out of touch for 30 years

    21. ExtensionLazy6115 on

You mean to service the ballooning benefit bill.

20% of those of working age in certain UK towns are now on disabled benefits. Even Manchester is 10%.

      It’s absurd and getting worse.

    22. Icy_One_237 on

Yeah I’m fine with if the world has shown anything in recent years its needed but can we at the very least stop donating/wasting resources in wars such as that of Iran/Israel which hold no importance for the security of the UK/EU. Whole fucking Middle East is a drain.

    23. BritishHobo on

Surely Starmer must know nothing he promises after the next election matters. He’s got about two years to do something – *anything* – radical enough to improve things to a degree that will change public opinion about him. Anything beyond that is a fantasy dream-world that will never come to pass.

    24. Bank-Expression on

Damn. I can’t believe we are going to have Farage as PM next. Horrific

    25. SupremoPete on

Thats if he is in power. Who knows what stuff will happen in politics before then especially with smelly Farage about

    26. Cyber_Connor on

I can’t wait for taxes to rise and then the cost of everything else to rise to make up for it

    27. Winterbliss on

Get fucking rid of the triple lock, pensioners cost us a fortune.

    28. stinkybumbum on

Considering g what we are paying already for defence this is needed.

    29. appletinicyclone on

How about a 1% wealth tax on people with more than 5 mill in assets to fund defence

Give them a sense of noblesse oblige. If you are rich af and have extensive property commercial or residential here you pay the defence tax which keeps the country and your property safe.

Then we can use our existing tax structure to focus on infrastructure and money is freed up for that.

25k-32k a year salary is the hard limit for so many people in this country for what like a decade

People need to be able to atleast rent okay or get more access to housing.

I’m fine with increase in defense spending off a wealth tax.

We should also focus on civil nuclear energy and renewables that work in tandem with that.

    30. greenvapour on

yeahh … for “defense” spending .. of course thats what its for

    31. Are taxes just going to rise until the end of time? Its this kind of nonsense which makes DOGE sound like a good idea.
