Sounds like a load of bollocks that reminds me of the excuses around the TFI bikes years ago. GoCar has been on the slide for a long time in Limerick, poor maintenance of vehicles and clunky booking interface as evidence of this. I’ve been a regular user since the start and some of the vehicles were downright filthy at times. Probably not making sufficient profit nationally and Limerick is the first victim.

I read somewhere before that people rent them to go have sex due to not having privacy at home or living with parents etc.
That’s all I think of when I see them

I’ve been thinking about this a lot since coming back from traveling. Limerick has become a shadow of what it used to be. I’m in the city every day, whether walking to work or just out and about, and rarely a day goes by without witnessing something: scum hanging around, people fighting, taking drugs, needles on the ground, people off their heads, religious nutjobs preaching, or others aggressively asking for money. Then add in all the shops closing down, the dirty streets, and it’s just so depressing.
People are quick to defend Limerick and say, “Ah, that happens everywhere,” and sure, it does but for a city the size of Limerick, it shouldn’t be a daily occurrence in the busiest parts of town. While traveling I was in cities 20x the size of our city centre and never once felt the same way. The centre feels dodgy and unsafe far too often, and it’s not just one section but spread out. Everyone goes on about how bad Dublin is, but Limerick is no different just on a smaller scale.
And this is also a part of why people are leaving. Housing is a huge factor, obviously, but even if you manage to get a place, you’re stuck paying crazy money for decades just to live in a city that has little investment or care put into it. I’m not saying it’s the end of the world, but it’s definitely an issue that needs proper attention by the government and local councils. The lack of structural improvements and actual policing against scum is damaging Ireland across the board. Who wants to pay premium to live in squaler?
Limerick does have multiple developments going on in the city which is much needed so there is some hope there but it’s just so poorly planned. That mayor people voted for is a joke then. Doing nothing but vanity projects for the street he earns €15k a month from being a landlord. Ireland in a nutshell.

ah yes the booking platform that I’ve been able to use once in an entire year because I booked two weeks in advance and which never has Cara available is reducing their numbers that will make the service better

I used the ZipCar service in London for years. You’d spend 5minutes going around the car with a provided notepad and mark any damage to the car that wasn’t already logged by the previous user. Then you contact their support and log the new damage so that you don’t take the hit.
The cars were basically spotless on the inside with some minor scratches or dent son the outside at the worst.
I’ve got GoCar cars and vans here with some fairly serious cosmetic damage and missing covers, covered in filth and debris both inside and out of it. And that’s when the vehicle is even in the spot on time of my collection.
I’m not sure why they don’t adopt a clearly superior system that ZipCar has.

Are these being targeted by people walking by or are they being targeted by people who are actually renting them?
