Politics aside (I have no special interest in generational blood feuds)… I’m heading off to the Royal International Air Tattoo with my lad next month. Apart from the spectacle it’s a great experience talking with air crews and getting around some of the aircraft on the ground, figure that things might be a bit more restricted this year.

They’re setting up actual fences this time? Good grief

I’d like to think they’re taking it seriously for once, but even after all these sabotages by Russian-backed gangs you’d think it would already be ‘ramped-up’.

Maybe they’re so tunnel-visioned on the drone threat that actual meatsacks didn’t register anymore.

    5. To ramp up security they need to have security in the first place.

As was pointed out after the Red Paint incident. The security was a 3rd party company and there is a 6ft garden fence between a public road and the runway.

What was that? Nothing to worry about, just the horse bolting. I’ll shut the door.

After spending 20+ years in the RAF I can honestly say the majority of RAF bases I was stationed at had areas where nothing but a small fence for security. I think Halton (RAF basic training camp) has a public footpath running through it.

My great aunt used to live next to RAF base. One day she saw some suspicious looking men sneaking around the perimeter so she called the local police on them.

Turned out it was the SAS on an exercise to see if they could breach the base security, they failed.

The obvious solution here is more old ladies living next to RAF bases.

This unacceptable change alters the terms and conditions of the MPGS. How are they supposed to get their 8 one hour rest and alertness naps per shift now?

    12. Ambersfruityhobbies on

They didn’t ramp up security after all those unidentified drones entered and had freedom of airspace directly over all those bases a few months back? The ones that grounded nearly all traffic?

    13. GloomyMasterpiece669 on

Pft… we’re an island nation. Not landlocked.

Only Japan and UK share this trait, amongst the top 10 economies globally.

We’ve historically never had robust defences, because unlike landlocked nations, we shouldn’t have to worry about citizens attacking their own military bases.

This in essence is what justified proscribing them as a terrorist one. And now our agencies can more easily conduct surveillance, freeze assets etc etc

People embarrassed about an RAF base being attacked should be more concerned about the societal tilt underway, where a British citizen things it reasonable to impact their own security.
