But this is for everyone who complains whenever people call the far-right neo-fascists or neo-nazis, their origins confirm it, their members too and are backed by Russia in most cases (Fico is an interesting case, since some could consider him far-left but he adopts the far-right’s talking points)
The anti-immigration Sweden Democrats on Thursday presented an almost 900-page report on its origins, detailing links to fascist and Nazi organisations as well as members’ xenophobic and anti-Semitic views.
The Sweden Democrats (SD) in 2021 commissioned the so-called “white book” in order to end speculation over the party’s origins.
Party leader Jimmie Akesson — at the helm since 2005 — has long sought to clean up the SD’s image.
The report noted the party was founded in 1988 as a reorganisation of the far-right and nationalist-revolutionary group Bevara Sverige Svenskt (BSS, or Keep Sweden Swedish).
SD’s early days in the late 1980s and early 1990s were characterised by “ethno-nationalism”, with opponents and immigrants described as “enemies”, historian Tony Gustafsson, who authored the report, told a press conference.
Gustafsson said that of the 22 founding members whose background had been identified, 18 had “direct or indirect” ties to BSS.
The connection to Nazi groups remained strong until the mid-1990s, Gustafsson said.
He said some of the party’s candidates in the 1994 parliamentary election were also members of the National Socialist party Nordiska Rikspartiet and Vitt Ariskt Motstand (White Aryan Resistance).
“White Aryan Resistance participated in demonstrations held by the Sweden Democrats and appear to have acted as a kind of unofficial security guards,” Gustafsson said.
In one instance, a rally held in Gothenburg in 1993 was inspired by the German Nazi party NSDAP’s rituals and “dramaturgy”, Gustafsson said.
In the early 1990s, the party also arranged concerts with white supremacist bands, and members of the party’s youth league were known to greet each other with the word “hell”, a Swedish version of the German “heil”, Gustafsson said.
The Sweden Democrats were initially a fringe party, but have grown considerably since Akesson took over the reins.
It entered parliament in 2010, and in the 2022 general election it emerged as Sweden’s second largest party with 20.5 percent of the vote. It currently props up Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s coalition right-wing government.
Mattias Karlsson, an SD lawmaker often described as the party’s main ideologist and who joined the party in the late 1990s, said Thursday he was “angry and disgusted” at the findings.
“It is a fact that my party was founded in a bad way by people with reprehensible views to a certain extent,” Karlsson told reporters.
Speaking Wednesday ahead of the report’s release, Akesson addressed the party’s past relationship to anti-Semitism.
“I apologise, personally and on behalf of the Sweden Democrats, that there was a time when my party harboured people with anti-Semitic views,” Akesson said.
Akesson introduced a policy of “zero tolerance” to racism in 2012 in an effort to tackle a spate of scandals involving party members.
