A firebrand State Department political appointee proposed using American taxpayer money to support French far-right leader Marine Le Pen as she appeals her embezzlement conviction, according to two State Department officials.

U.S. President Donald Trump and his allies have joined far-right politicians in Europe in condemning Le Pen’s conviction in March as politically motivated. Le Pen, one of Europe’s most recognizable anti-immigrant euroskeptics, has turned her party into a mainstream political force over the past decade and was polling as the frontrunner for France’s 2027 presidential election before her guilty verdict.

The two officials, who were granted anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly about internal State Department discussions and fear reprisals from department leadership, said a senior adviser within the State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor named Samuel Samson made the initial funding recommendation this week after meeting with the leadership from Le Pen’s party, the National Rally, late last month.

So she’s in debt to the two biggest assholes on both sides of the atlantic?

Of course when other countries meddle in their elections it’s not allowed

r/Europe Don’t end up in endless “shock news” (where there’s endless “omg they did that” like MSNBC, CNN, etc is US). It’s good to be informed but look at what happened in the states. I think it’s obvious anyone pro-Putin is going to be in the same camp and supported as well.

The reality is they don’t care unless what happens to her becomes an issue.. focus more on the things they’re trying to sneakly do like the Heritage Foundation, they’re up to all sorts of shit yet little is ever said – that is fucking scary.

Everyone here criticises trump, but when he tells us to spend 5% on nato, everyone nods their heads like sheep. The United States does not spend 5% on nato.

So they’re pushing for regime change in Europe and Iran, says a lot really…

Are they trying to get a frequent flyer miles bonus for international political meddling or something?

    8. Keep your dirty fingers out of the EU damn it. We do not want your Heirtage Foundation, we do not want you fat right bullshit and we do not want your stupid narratives.

Honestly the EU needs stricter rules for these kind of foreign interventions no matter from who.

Literally cannot help themselves meddle in other countries elections. Soon it will be Allende and politician assassinations again.

Must be said that the US and USSR happily meddled in western europe elections from the 1950 up until the end of the cold war.

In france the major trade union (CGT) split in two, with the more reform-oriented CGT-FO being supported by the USA. The anti-nuclear movement in germany against euromissiles was an offshot of the KGB. And so on…

It’s the first time since 1945 that the US could decide to actively support the far right. Which is a big deal. And gives another clue if needed be, what the GOP has turned into: a true, extremist, authoritarian far-right party

Maybe France should pass a law forbidding politicians from being funded by foreign powers, if it has not already.

Well, she already got loans from Russian banks, so it’s not like this is anything new for Le Pen anyway.

Of course. Nothings more international than ultra-nationalists.

(I wish that contradiction fucking mattered anymore… but not to the post-modern far right it dont!)

    13. EcoloFrenchieDubstep on

Yeah well she is ineligible right now due to recent affairs of fraud so they can try all they want, she won’t be able to represent herself in 2027.

The world will be better off once Trump bankrupts America. It can’t happen soon enough!

Can we start making laws to bad political donations from other countries, or groups from other countries…its getting worrying that US is pushing this stuff everywhere.

    16. Recent_Blacksmith282 on

For someone who’s so French-first she surely loves getting help from other countries

    17. Separate-Ear4182 on

Yeah she already had been convicted and cant represent herself for the next election. Also shes a fascist pig like her dead father.
