There will be a lot more of this in the future with the way things are going. It’s a pretty damning reflection of modern Ireland.

Unfortunately this is going to be a huge problem.

Mandatory pensions are coming into effect because people haven’t provisioned for retirement, but far too little far too late.

It must be awfully stressful to reach that age and feel hopeless.

“I never thought I’d be homeless” – yes, but you knew you’d stop working at some age, didn’t buy a house at any point or make provisions to be able to afford to continue renting etc. Was a forever home or the means to pay for housing just meant to magically appear?

Absolutely a distressing situation to find oneself in but surely have to take some steps to plan ahead and avoid it. It’s like driving a car with your eyes closed and saying I didn’t think I was going to crash when the inevitable happens.

Either you plan ahead or live with family. Worst comes to the worst garden room apartment plannings been relaxed lately.

Young adults living with parents while they save for a house becomes elderly parents live with a child while waiting for social housing

And at the same time there are villages and ribbon developments of houses empty for 90% of the year – holiday houses owned by people with a family home already. Especially in Galway and along the west coast generally.

It’s time we took up the French practice of placing heavy fines on house and apartment owners who leave perfectly good houses empty. It would be very possible to rent these out for 50 weeks of the year, and pay the tenant back the price of a holiday in Paris for the two weeks you want to use them!

It’s very sad but there were decades and decades when Irish property was dirt cheap , they had plenty of chances …

My grandfather and grandaunt fever a flat on Raglan Road Ballsbridge in the 70s and 80s on the pension with no problem. Oh how things have changed.
