I remember the last one, I just put my phone on flight mode for 10 minutes.
I never got the alert last time. And I’m sad as *fuck* because I’m a little excited to get one… hopefully.

i haven’t let google update my phone since i bought it about 6 years ago and I have completely disabled all internet connections for most of that time this doesn’t affect me
I’m not bragging i just wanted to share also i don’t like the idea of any company having access to other peoples private communications on my device
i keep my internet and phone separate this also adds an extra layer of security to 2 factor authentication
edit: haha yes sadly this is real but i don’t have a tin foil hat yet i swear I’m just genuinely autistic (as in diagnosed) and data protection is a like an obsessive interest of mine so yep this is real lol

When I lived in Japan these alerts happened for earthquakes and typhoons. It was amazing at keeping people safe and ensuring you had time to get somewhere safe before a serious event.
I do think it is good to have a system in place especially with how bizarre things are going these days.

This is the most ridiculously hyperbolic headline, especially given this is a repeat of a test from a year or two ago.
I don’t think any of these tests have actually triggered on my phone before.
Curious to see if this one will work.
It’s a good idea to test these systems. But I often wonder if there is an actual practiced plan they can enact should it ever be used for the real thing? There are some situations I can think of where there is very little you can actually do.

Can someone explain like I’m five how this works exactly? Who/what/how does it get to all (in theory) phones? Can they see if they’ve missed x% of people? I’m not a tech noob but I’m genuinely curious how this works and don’t have a clue.
There was a program this week about the flooding in Valencia a few years ago.
In the program they explained how the authorities identified the area at risk, calculated which cell towers served the area, and sent alerts which included longitude/latitude so only those in the risk zone got the alert.
That’s how this sort of system should work. At the moment it seems the UK are still at the megaphone to all point. I hope the underlying platform is able to define strict areas.

I live somewhere that has this. In my case it’s generally used for earthquakes.
I’ve found it’s too delayed to be much use in that case. Every time it’s gone off on my phone, I’ve already been down the stairs and pretty much outside. So it’s about 60 seconds too late to be useful to me.
But for other things I can see it being useful. Announcing weather events, terrorist attacks I guess.

When we had the last one, my dad (late 70s) had been falling down various YouTube conspiracy rabbit holes, and turned his phone off because “they have no right to force this on me!”
I got the alert queuing for a wrestling show down Camden high street the last time. It was quite a surreal experience to hear a packed street just blare out that noise.

I don’t like this. I’ll be switching my phone off, I’ll not be forced to do as they say to operate my own phone.
While I am for this it never hurts to test these sort of things they should really give full communication on this such as make sure people know in advance . Just springing it on people could cause problems

I’ve read several articles about these teats over the years, literally never happened to my phone or anyone else I know. It is complete bullshit.
