Or put in other words, Putin simply thought he could get away with invading Ukraine, and the ‘reasons ‘ were just made up around that. Propaganda for the masses.
‘Why did you try to rape that girl?’
‘Eh, because, ehm, she dressed slutty. Yes that’s it! She made me do it!’
The whole Russian ‘we had to invade Ukraine because they might join NATO.’ fake ‘reason’ is as silly as ‘I had to try to rape that girl then because she was going to buy mace to defend herself soon.’
Putin invaded Ukraine because it’s always bothered him that he didn’t own it. Above all the other former Soviet territories the issue of Ukraine is deeply embedded in the Russian psyche as a society, probably from a combination of childhood education, generations of propaganda, and just a general superiority complex with a ‘Slavic’ form of racism. I mean, it really REALLY irks them.
All of this is pretty well understood if you’ve spent any time at all within Russia but obviously using NATO as a scapegoat works well to the international allies (Iran, China, etc). But it also works well with NATO— western countries and especially Americans love hearing that everything is about them.
The only reason Ukraine was illegally invaded in 2014 and 2022 was that Putin thought it a good idea and went for it. With nothing in the echelons of power stopping his aspirations.
All other ‘reasons’ are inventions to please, and attempts to rationalize the decision for war.

no other reasons, why democratic governments are not doing this statements?
China, Iran, Russia, North Korea are enemies, put sanctions and tariffs on them all, stop buying from them
open Taiwan embassies, close Chinese embassies
Higher prices are better because they don’t fund wars against us
