Never heard of that. But I’m already old. From what my son told me it’s the same as before. Usually same age couples or minor age difference.

Nicht ganz. Es gibt tatsächlich so etwas wie eine Übergangsstufe zwischen der Fähigkeit, sexuellen Handlungen zuzustimmen, und der Unmündigkeit.
In Österreich ist man ab dem 14. Lebensjahr gesetzlich alt genug (wohlgemerkt: gesetzlich – moralisch finde ich es bedenklich, wenn ein Erwachsener mit einer 14 Jährigen schläft), um selbst zu entscheiden, mit wem man Sex haben möchte.
Vor dem 14. Geburtstag gelten jedoch besondere Regelungen:
Eine eine 12-Jähriger maximal mit einem/einer 15-Jährigen, und eine 13-Jähriger maximal mit einem/einer 16-Jährigen sexuelle Kontakte haben.
Unser Jugendschutz in Bezug auf Sexualität ist leider eher schwach. Ich fände es sinnvoll, wenn diese Drei-Jahres-Regel bis zum 17. Lebensjahr ausgeweitet würde (also alles vor dem 18. Geburtstag)
The 3 years gap limit is the exception in the law against the sexual abuse of minors under the age of 14, not sure how common such couples are. In fact if you have sexual intercourse with a minor and you are not one too or much older you have likely commited some crime.

From the age of 14 you can date whoever you want in Austria, yes. They cannot be in a relationship with a power imbalance like teacher-student though.
The question is, of course, isn’t it always a power imbalance if one is significantly older and the other only 14 (a still developing brain).
I know of a 14 year old girl who got pregnant by a 43 year old family friend and the two married as soon as she was allowed to marry. It was kept quiet but it was extremely creepy and people were grossed out by it. The parents still stayed friends with the guy and they are one big family still. The (now) grown-up woman still claims to love him and that she always did. I don’t always want to simply say that young people cannot decide for themselves at all, but this dude knew the girl since she was a baby and this aspect makes it so uncomfortable as you just know he groomed her. How can you stay friends with a dude who’s into 14 year olds and said 14 year old is your daughter? 14 year olds are so easily manipulated. It reminds me if this female teacher – student situation in the US, where they also married but he later realized what actually happened to him.
As you can see, it’s absolutely not socially acceptable but it still happens very rarely.

I think that rule doesn’t apply to dating but specifically to having sex. Just answering from what I was taught as a teen: yes. I’ll try to explain:
Once you are 14 you are considered old enough to freely choose your sexual partners, no matter their age (if they consent, obviously). So a 14-year-old could sleep with a 20-year-old.
You can’t sleep with someone who is younger than 14, as that’s against the law. So our 20-year-old from before couldn’t date a 13-year-old.
However, since you only become criminally responsible at the age of 14 as well, if both are under the age of 14, it’s fair game.
Now imagine a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old in a relationship. Both under 14, no problem. Now wait a year and all of the sudden one of them is 14, the other one isn’t. So to not criminalize a relationship like that, we have the 3-year-rule.
It’s not the police’s job to enforce that law. You’re not going to have officers in teens’ bedrooms.
Extreme example: if you are accused of raping a 13-year-old girl, you can’t use as an excuse that she consented, as that would still be illegal for you.
The last sentence probably was a jape at Macron, who married his teacher and later became president of France. Though I’m pretty sure they didn’t date while he was her student.
Dating your student is an absolute no-go by the way, independent of the age. Even if they are over 20, it would still be considered abuse of power.
