both the critics and supporters of Germany’s energy policy over the past 2 decades have a point
the Energiewende was and still is very expensive for the German state, as subsidies for renewable electricity generation alone last year were **18.5 billion euros, or roughly 0.45 % of GDP**
but that is because Germany built solar and wind “too early” , back when they were more expensive, and thus had to subsidized
the most common subsidy in Germany is feed-in-tarrifs, basically the state guarantees the solar or wind producers a fixed price for 20 years, and the state makes up the difference between the market price and the fixed price
example for rooftop solar
* projects built in 2005 are guaranteed a price of 55 cents/kwh sold,
* projects built this year are guaranteed a price of only 7.91 cents/kwh, so 85% price decline
average tarrif of all curent solar projects in Germany is roughly 19 cents/kwh, and they sell it at lets say 4-5 cents/kwh, so the government still has to pay out of pockets 15 cents for every kwh on average to solar power producers
so the Energiewende its expensive as fuck, because Germany started out way too early
if all solar and wind capacity had the feed in-tariff average of last year, subsides would have amounted to max 3-4 billion euros last year
and those will keep declining in the future

* **Germany and Germans paid the price for the early development of solar power for the rest of the world. This makes the Energiewende expensive.**
* **But its not an intrinsic problem of solar, its the problem of being the first to adopt it on scale.**
* **Nowadays solar is 85% cheaper than 20 years ago.**
**This is a point that has to be brought up when some weirdos will ask Germany in the future to pay for “climate reparations”**

I did my master’s thesis on a somewhat related topic and, let’s be real, the major contributor to the decreasing costs has been by and large the increased capacity by China.
Chinese R&D, large subsidies, and large building capacity have made solar energy cheap. Germany played a very small role in comparison so it feel a bit disingenuous to try to all but say that solar is cheap because of deutschland.
Germans shouldn’t govern themselves. They are just complete garbage at it. No need to go to the 1930s to see this. You can’t even build an airport, governing a whole nation is just not going to work. My best advice is to ask Finland if they can take over for 25 years, to see if they can sort your shit out. If you get the nation back after that, it will probably take you a while to mess it up again…
The same is true for The Netherlands. Especially for the tax incentives for EVs.
Subsidies really work great if you want to speed up development and adaptation. Some things you cannot leave up to the market.
Unfortunately, a conservative government decided to destroy Germany’s most promising technology branch for ideological reasons.
The factories where bought by Chinese companies, disassembled and rebuild in China – and since this day even Germany has to buy it’s panels from China.
That’s how conservative dimwits destroyed Germany’s chance of a second Witrschaftswunder. But this years the voters where stupid enough to reelect them once more. This was the moment I realized that my beloved home-country is lost.
