While it is sad some people will lose their jobs, It could have been a lot worse

Thankfully a relatively small number considering they employ 4,900 in Leixlip and they’re cutting 20% of their global workforce.

That’s out of about 5,000 employees here in total, so Ireland’s being hit fairly lightly.

As strange as it sounds, i would take that as a win considering the numbers they are letting go globally.

With current jobs shortage, hopefully, those affected will be back working quickly enough.

That’s probably an indication they’re quite committed to the Leixlip location. It could have been much worse.

It’s hard to underestimate just how much of a weak position Intel is in at the moment. They’ve basically gone from being world leaders in chips for decades to suddenly being a boring, slow moving behemoth that’s lagging way behind on innovation and has become increasingly less relevant.

If Intel doesn’t make some big breakthroughs soon, their future’s looking dim.

The EU is mad to not get left behind in chip development. ‘Investments to support the Chips Act

The Chips Act itself should result in additional public and private investments of more than €15 billion’ [https://commission.europa.eu/strategy-and-policy/priorities-2019-2024/europe-fit-digital-age/european-chips-act_en](https://commission.europa.eu/strategy-and-policy/priorities-2019-2024/europe-fit-digital-age/european-chips-act_en)

It seems strange to feak out about not making enough good chips. and to fire people making chips. Obviously Intel have to make good chips but it seems easier to improve existing chip making companies than to develop entirely new ones.
