If Labour really can’t achieve anything in government they should hold a general election.
One source on Sky News said there may be 68 Labour MPs against and 30-40 abstentions. If this pans out the government will lose the vote.
Also this is only second reading, if MPs are still unhappy with the committee stage there’s every chance it’ll fall at the third reading.
The government won’t be defeated. Rebels under the Tories used to claim this all the time and 9 times out of 10 it never came to anything. Mostly, this is going to serve to teach mps how little power they actually have.
If they couldn’t defy the government effectively with majorities of 30 – 70, Labour mps won’t be able to with a majority of 100+.
To be honest saying “loads” are going to vote against it has the feeling of “please don’t cave and leave me high and dry there are loads of us”.
And if it’s bad on this imagine what would happen if they trimmed pension to double lock
i don’t understand how reeves and starmer cannot see the harm and distress they are causing not only the disabled but their entire families and support network by demonising for what? what reason are they trying to get everyone pointing at the disabled saying its all your fault?
We can only hope there are enough of them to stop this wanton cruelty.
Really doubt the rebellion will come to much. When it comes down to it – I expect Labour MPs to put party ahead of country.
I hope so. I really don’t see Labour surviving as a party if these cuts are approved
The legacy is already in. Every government has a legacy. Even considering this option is a disgusting idea. Why punish people who haven’t caused the economic damage and ignore those that have? Supermarkets and greedy corporations caused this cos they want more and more. Tax them.
All of labour should vote against it and let the tories vote for it and then say the tories wanted the cuts not us
Well Labour aren’t going to get it through then because Tories said they’d vote against it, Lib Dem’s seemed to imply they would as well and Reform hardly makes a difference. So I think more Labour MPs will rebel if they see how many are against it.
It’s OK everyone, you’ll get what you want. More money thrown at the ever increasing benefits bill while the rest of us are taxed into poverty to pay for it.
Good i hope he does this is sickening targeting our most vulnerable
Practically foaming at the mouth to go against their own party and put the Gov in an even more unstable position.
All so they can turn to their peers, friends and followers and say “We did it! We’ve forced them to stop welfare cuts, we’ve saved you all! You’re welcome!”
Only to rebel once more when it comes to having to make larger than planned Tax increases to compensate for the lack of savings.
Can’t even adjust the system slightly to force out the cheats that are currently claiming PIP at the expense of every Tax paying Brit.
