An increase in births to fathers over 60 is interesting. However, the increase to mums other 35 isn’t and points to the ever increasing issue of the cost of living and childcare.
I’ve only skimmed this article but they’re not delving into the cultural elements to give a more accurate picture. The uptick in births is likely driven by immigrant families having children; the rate of which increased from 31.8% in 2023 to 33.9% in 2024, where only the mother was foreign-born.
About 40% of births are to foreign-born parent/s overall, up from 37.3% in 2023.
Finally, it’s still the 3rd lowest births rate despite the uptick, so it is potentially an anomaly.
