Why not just fully abolish the flagship Thatcherite policy like Wales and Scotland.

Good. Call me crazy but we don’t need valuable social housing stock being sold off. Now they just need to release funds to build more.

Yeah, you could only really have those sweet 1000% return opportunities if you’re an old fuck, and now you get to vote reform on your way out as one final fuck you.

Excellent start.
Now get rid of it . ENTIRELY .
If you can afford to buy a house, you shouldn’t be in social housing.

Good. Selling off the housing stock at discounted rates, money went back to Central Government to spend on other things. Social housing not replaced. Contributed to the housing crisis we see today.

Changing the minimum term for eligibility for RtB from 3 to 10 years and changing so you can only do it once. Adding more stringent affordability checks to ensure people can actually afford home ownership. Thes echanges amongst other things.

This is good, but like, why half measures? The lack of social housing comes from privitisations, and I think there’s a very easy solution that everyone should be able to get on board with. Landlords who break tenancy laws in any substantial way, should lose their property and it ought to go back to the local council, in addition to tenants being compensated (if the landlords don’t like it and quit, good riddance, the for-profit privitisation of housing has been devastating to affordability of major cities and prices will in theory go down, driving down rents as well).
I don’t think this suggestion is particularly radical (I do have a radical take on housing, in that I believe in the total abolition of for-profit landlording). Although I must admit that Keir Starmer is absolutely brain-dead not to endorse rent caps, if he actually wants to fend off Farage, they’re overwhelmingly popular with the public (even half of landlords are ok with them). I feel that not doing so, shows how much of a right-wing conman Starmer is, but hey, there’s reasons why Corbyn got way more votes in 2019 than Starmer did in 2024, and it’s because the public preferred Corbyn’s policies to Starmer deciding on more of the same. Just tax the rich super agressively, and put things into public ownership without shareholder compensation, if you need to worry about the finances. I feel there’s a slogan here: #takebackcontrol?

It’s striking that those who decry wealth inequality are the same people applauding policies that strip the poorest of any real chance at owning a home.
The real fix for our housing shortage isn’t funnelling taxpayer cash into large construction firms, but rather restoring individuals’ right to develop their own land without arbitrary permissions or excessive impact assessments. Owning land should carry the natural freedom to build and use it as you see fit, not leave you at the mercy of local councils or disgruntled neighbours.
