      > Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told the European Union’s top diplomat on Wednesday that Beijing cannot afford a Russian loss in Ukraine because it fears the United States would then shift its whole focus to Beijing, according to several people familiar with the exchange.

Does that mean, between the lines, that they admit they would stop supporting Russia if we can support them against an US agression ?

That would complete the replay of 1756.

Well, Trump is going to do that anyway. His cabinet has quite a few anti-China hawks, and he’s already cutting Ukraine aid off. Those hawks are constantly doing overtures towards Russia to shift them away from China. Trump is personally infatuated by Putin as well.

So whether China props up Russia or not, they’ll be faced by US and their allies in Pacific if they take a crack at Taiwan with military.

What a surprise. Water is wet. China is on Russia side.

“Sources say” just means *I pulled that out of my ass*.
China doesn’t want Russia to lose, but they sure as hell don’t want them to win either , a half-dead, broke Russia is way easier to milk for cheap resources.

Same with Ukraine. China’s got zero beef with them, and Ukraine’s biggest trading partner is also China.

    5. Lol, it’s rather the opposite. Russia and the US banding together against China. A defeated Russia will always be safer for China under any scenario than Russia and the US combining forces against China.

What strategy would China like to adopt? Switching to supporting Russia to give reason to the West to drop China and to give Putin an opportunity to try to shift the conflict towards China as the bad guy? If China truly switches to stronger support for Russia, maybe the Chinese are not as intelligent as I thought.

China really don’t want war. They never did. The US (yeak and Russia and many others) are the warmongers. It’s important to remember in the years to come because the world can blow up if certain authoritarian leaders with too many nukes gets too restless.

I have a serious crush on certain sides of Chineese society and can’t disagree with this:
“Europe is currently facing various challenges, but none of them came from China in the past, present and future. The two sides should respect each other, learn from each other, develop and progress together, and make new contributions to human civilisation,”

China needs a multipolar world. It can’t afford (yet) for the US to focus entirely on it. I bet China would be very happy to see the EU detaching from the US and no longer acting as its satellite, instead trying to rise as a third global power. That way, the US wouldn’t focus solely on China but also on Europe

Right now, China prefers a multipolar world with three or more major powers, not just two. But since it’s making strong advances in science, technology, and much more, it might soon no longer care. At that point, China would probably already have the capabilities to counter the US on its own. All it needs is time

It’s really fascinating the way that Trump basically giving up on helping Ukraine somehow crosses a massive red line for this sub when China openly helping Russia fight the war leads to comments suggesting the EU should team up with…China.

    9. Impossible-Chip-4637 on

So China is scared of America and doesn’t want them to focus on China. So they want Russia to win completely in Ukraine to shift American focus? A bunch of cowards who want to see Europe defeated.

      – Russia cannot afford itself to loose because the war was a personal project and vendetta of a singular wankstian with ego more fragile than a famed Fabergé egg (that is actually owned by a private individual who also owns a 1/4 or russia)
      – Ukraine cannot afford to loose the war because them it would literally be erased, even the prick himself openly stated multiple times that Ukrainians and Russians are the same people, and his propaganda isn’t even trying to hide the idea of complete genocide
      – EU cannot afford for Ukraine to loose because after that comes next war of annexation by putin’s regime, this time aimed at Baltics or Poland

And now China states it cannot afford Russia to loose. Correct me if I’m wrong but that kind of deadlock is solved only by all out war between all participants, like a Korean one

    11. tesfabpel on

Guess what? It seems that Trump is progressively sidelining Ukraine himself.

So, either if Russia loses, wins, or the war continues, the US’ attention is already shifting…

There’s a political sciemtist in my country (Bernardo Pires de Lima) who suggested for Europe to increase support of China to isolate Russia

I think it’s really interesting, he suggested things like supporting chinese efforts of peace in Israel and to increase economic cooperation with them and try to fuck Russia

    13. Status-Screen-2484 on

That’s exactly why countries of the likes of NK, China, Turkey and so on are on the side of Russia. If Russia is dealt with they will be one position higher on the list.

    14. This is interesting. Kallas is playing in the major league now and they’ve given her a remedial class on the spot. That was an opportunity for Kallas to remind China that the EU really, really, really cannot afford an Ukrainian loss in Ukraine war and also that yes, we would like to keep doing business with them too, something is going to give.

    15. TheBewlayBrothers on

I imagine the ideal state for china would be an forever war in ukraine where the us is tied up for a long time

    16. yourmomwasmyfirst on

Exactly, whether Trump “likes” Russia or not, Ukraine’s victory is the path to China containment.
The main problem is Trump’s potential/likely blackmail or bribe by Russia, and Trump’s affection for authoritarian governments…..making the U.S. more closely aligned to both Russia and China than the EU. His rupture in relationship with the EU and Canada makes me think he doesn’t care about China containment at all, he mostly cares about what Putin cares about – weakening the West and expanding Russia’s sphere of influence.

    17. RiverMurmurs on

Makes sense, though it’s interesting they’d say it so openly.

The joke’s on Europe which still hasn’t been able to actually do anything meaningful to help stop the war.

    18. Born-Requirement2128 on

It’s pretty clear the US would benefit massively from making Russia lose quickly and moving to contain China.

Unfortunately, Trump would never get to build Trump Tower Moscow if that happened, so things are looking good for Russia and China.

    19. Taiwan.

This is in large part about Taiwan.

China doesn’t want a US with its hands free and committed to defending Taiwan against a possible naval blockade, followed by an invasion in the 2027-2032 time frame.

China is telling the EU in between the lines it can chose between Ukraine and Taiwan, but will not be allowed to keep both as independent states.

    20. Beyllionaire on

Uh? Isn’t Trump’s whole strategy to bully Europe to strengthen itself so that the US can gtfo out of Europe and dedicate itself fully to China?

Whether Russia wins or loses, the US is going to stay on China’s ass anyway. To Trump’s America, Russia is NOT a threat anymore. It’s Europe’s problem and Russia cannot threaten the US. China is seen as potentially more dangerous than the Soviet Union used to be and that’s why they’re pulling out of Europe.

So China should be scared either way, Trump’s focus is already on you.

    21. Darkone539 on

This doesn’t sounds like a Europe problem. We need to stand by Ukraine.

    22. Rogthgar on

Given that Trump seems to want to focus on China and evidently doesn’t think of Russia as a problem… this kinda leaves China with two options:

Either commit fully to support Russia, aka stop pretending it already isn’t, and hope a Russian victory will force America to split its attentions even if Trump doesn’t.

Or completely abandon Russia because now they everything at home in case Trump has another brain-fart and bombs them as a warning.

    23. Europe needs to defeat Russia then. Or else Russia will starve Europe with the Ukrainian wheat alone.

    24. TheFuzzyFurry on

If they hard commit to Russian victory, they will still not be able to achieve it, but it will make them much weaker against Taiwan and friends
