Ho incontrato filmati di rilascio della polizia come oltre 1.000 arresti effettuati utilizzando la tecnologia di riconoscimento del viso in tempo reale

Coming to a protest near you! As soon as we used it in the worst criminals so if you don’t support it you look like a bad person

How many mistaken arrests? How many mis-identified people?

Remember the point of a justice system is to keep the innocent free. Otherwise we’d just have the police send people they accuse of crimes directly to prison, without any checks (courts, lawyer, etc) at all.

So how many innocent people were drawn into this?

Not sure how I feel on this. Can imagine its “good in principle but flawed by the people using it” as usual.

    4. It’s just another probable cause generator, talk to any police officer and they’ll have a story of following someone until they commit a minor traffic violation and using that to pull them over. We all break the law all the time, something like this can be used to target violent offenders, it can also be used to harass individuals or minority groups.

It doesn’t seem like it matters, I don’t see this security state stuff slowing down. But the next ‘proscribed group’ could be something you care about and could land you in this database.

What do they do about face coverings? Is it a stop, remove, and smile for the camera or you’ll be arrested situation?

Claiming the government will do this would have you branded a tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theorist a couple years back.

Maaan… this is one of those things where a slippery slope argument seems like a totally legitimate argument- like criminalising “hate speech” – seems reasonable on the surface (so everyone supports it) but which is already being used as a stick to beat people with and is so wide open.to abuse it’s scary.

On the surface this is an amazing bit of tech that could do a lot of good but…

      Oof..

Like with the whole “police using public genetic databases” to catch criminals, again, seems like a great idea but I always think, what if the Nazis had had that tech? If they knew exactly who all the “undesirables” were.

What if they had this tech too?

Man, it doesn’t bear thinking about really… and it might sound dramatic “oh but what about the Nazis” but it would be naive to think something like that couldn’t happen again. All you have to do is look around at how polarised people are getting, how one group (on both sides) are happy to dehumanise the other group for different opinions and beliefs, to see how this could end up in the hands of someone who could exploit and abuse it.

Couple all of those things together and you have a gestapo wet dream.

I guess the cat is already out of the bag though so, any concerns are kind of redundant at this point.

There will be absolutely no issues at all with the Met using it.

      >Why are the Police not doing their job, they don’t do a thing and criminals run free

Police arrest 1000 people using new technology

      >Why are the police doing the job like that

Do we really think the average plod is going to turn down the opportunity to arrest someone when a computer says so, even if it’s blindingly obvious that this isn’t the guy?

As so many other people have said, this technology could be great, but most police officers in the UK lack the intellectual fortitude to use it properly.

When it was tested a few years ago, they simply kept turning the match accuracy down until they started getting hits. Huge numbers of people were improperly hassled by the police as a result. Obviously, if you’re in the Met, that’s a huge victory.

It’s worth bearing in mind: the police as an organisation may have various goals, but individual police officers have absolutely no interest in anything that doesn’t make you arrestable. It’s all about hitting targets and getting detections, and if they can grab a random person, find a crime and make an arrest in the space of five minutes, that’s a big win for them.
