Its really absurd because I’ve barely visited many British cities, I’ve been to dozens of cities in other countries courtesy of a combination of cheap fiights and mostly trains
A lot of people are basically priced out of their own country. Though for commuters it’s probably worse, because at least with leisure travel you can often be flexible and find cheaper times.
It cost me 80 quid to travel 2 hours to London and back for the weekend. I’d have been cheaper driving and parking. When you can get flights to a completely different country for not much more than that, you know your train priced are f*cked.
How do we fix this realistically? My understanding is that bringing the routes into public ownership will likely do nothing to bring the cost down because the rolling stock still has to be rented from companies owned by PE firms.
Gov official: “Do we have the highest rail fares in Europe?”
Commuter: “Yes”
Gov official: “Great, let’s make them even higher”
Play the system.
Use delay repay as much as possible. Ive had probably over £100 back now for delays. Even if its only 30 mins claim it

Well, I guess there’s no money to subsidize things for the avg person when we got to keep on increasing those welfare benefits and WFA for the pensioners. Such is the trade off we make in life .. we live with the consequences of our decisions.
FYI for anyone confused – this article is from March talking about when the fares went up in March, they’re not ‘going up’ again soon (see you next March!)
Even a couple of years ago it was cheaper to train Norwich to London, go to a gig, then fly to Glasgow and go to another gig, for the price of the rail ticket to get Norwich to Glasgow. It’s a joke and I very very rarely use a train. Rather have the freedom of a car.
