The battle for Bakhmut was one of the most brutal chapters of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine — and the place where some of its most intimate moments were born.
Ukrainian writer [Myroslav Laiuk](https://www.instagram.com/myroslavlaiuk/?hl=en) and photojournalist [Danylo Pavlov](https://www.instagram.com/danylo.pavlov/?hl=en) spent the winter and spring of 2022–2023 documenting life on the frontlines around Bakhmut — the site of one of the fiercest battles of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The result is *Bakhmut*, an award-winning collection of essays and photographs that captures the human face of war.
