>Mr Justice McDermott set a headline sentence of 25 years but reduced that to 21 to account for the defendant’s age.
He further reduced the sentence to 15 years after considering mitigating factors including the teenager’s guilty plea and his “early and consistent expression of remorse, which appears to be genuine and comprehensive”.
When sentencing children, the Supreme Court has found that it is preferable to suspend part of the sentence to encourage rehabilitation
>The now-19 year-old was one month short of his 18th birthday when he murdered Mr Keating on 13 June 2023 at Main Street, Ongar, Dublin 15.
Am I in the minority thinking this is ridiculous? This person will probably serve around half the time he would have if he’d been just four weeks older. You can murder someone in broad daylight and be out before your 30th birthday.
Teenagers are running amok in the city centre with near impunity. It reminds me of that case where some yob pushed a girl under a DART train and didn’t end up serving any time at all.
Surely, for violent crimes like this, the minimum age to be tried as an adult should be lowered.

So the knife was “stashed” in the “nearby stairwell,” but he was using it for protection?
What a particular way of defending themselves.
Joke…

I remember Aaron Keating, a nice bloke who had his challenges and was always around the place. This scumbag picked on him as an easy mark to go and display his masculinity or whatever.
The sentence is ridiculous. Headline sentence of 25 years reduced to 13 years and good chance he’ll be out quicker than that. Probably in his early 30s this guy is back on the road and has more of his life in front of him than Aaron did.
The guy had a knife stashed in a stairwell. He ran to get it. He came back. He tried and missed stabbing Aaron Keating, and got him on the second attempt. Fled the scene. Disposed of the knife. The probation report says he’s a high risk of re-offending if returned to the community without proper engagement.
He ought to be locked away forever for that level of premeditation, or until the probation service is convinced he’s a reformed adult.

He was one month shy of 18? Why are we pretending he was a kid? He should be charged as an adult. That’s old enough to know better

That is a disgraceful decision from the court. It shows nothing but contempt for human life in this country.

“CCTV footage showed an altercation between Mr Keating and the defendant which prompted the youth to run to a nearby stairwell where he had stashed a knife for self-protection.
He returned within 90 seconds of the first altercation and pursued Mr Keating across the road despite one of his friends telling him to stop.
The defendant attempted to stab Mr Keating but missed before he “made another lunge”, the judge said, causing the fatal wound to the abdomen.
A pathologist found the cause of death to be haemorrhage and shock due to the single stab wound.
Mr Justice McDermott noted that the defendant attacked his victim openly, in a public place, presenting a “terrifying spectacle” to shoppers, including women and children.
The defendant fled the scene, disposed of the knife and made no attempt to assist the dying man, the judge said.
Mr Keating was loved by his family, the judge said, and is deeply missed. His life was “needlessly and violently taken”, he said.
The judge said that the defendant had done well in primary school but by the age of 12, he began regularly using drugs. He had seen numerous doctors and therapists over the years but continued to abuse drugs.”
Nah the lad knew what he was doing. Nobody thinks to sort a dispute like this. Nobody. I honestly do not know if it’s possible to rehabilitate that mentality. 13 years seems short for what I just read. 17 year olds are dumb but this is a conscious decision on his part. He got mad, got a weapon, stabbed someone and left them there to die.
