The Balkan series continues: Bulgarian–Macedonian was yesterday’s main event. Today, it’s Croatia–Serbia in the spotlight.

I’m feeling pretty today, so just here to say that Tesla was actually Kosovan. This way I can piss off everyone

    3. Lena_Zelena on

I couldn’t care less if he was Serb, Croat, American or a freaking Martian. He was an exceptional scientist and every person should know his name.

    4. 2neuroni on

He was romanian, his name was Nicolae Țeslea!

      (i made this shit up)

    5. Certain_Bag6363 on

This could start a balkan war again between croatians, serbs and slovenians..😄

    6. Very bizarre to me how this is still “debated” – he was a Serb, lots of great Croatians exist too. It’s ok. You’re welcome for solving the Balkan debate guys!

    7. schmungussking on

Nikola Tesla is Serbian? Croat? You’ve been fed lies he’s actually Nick O’Latesla, Dublins best inventor

    8. Well, I wished his family survived so that they could tell us if they are Serbs or not. Too bad Ustaše decided to kill them for some unknown reason

    9. MightyTheAlmighty on

cant wait for the annual argument between a chicago serb and a dublin croat that ignores the fact that tesla only got successful when he left this shithole

Why did you have to write what nationality he was,who asked?

    11. Great_Reality2536 on

Regardless of nationality, an inventor or scientist who has done great things is a genius.

      Dear Balkan redditors,

I was promised a fight, so please follow up on it!
It’s lukewarm arguing at best so far.

      Many thanks in advance!

Nikola Tesla is was a Croatian Serb and a dedicated Yugoslav.

I am tired of uninformed Westerners pretending there is a debate on his nationality, at least a doublesided one.
There are just about no Croats that pretend he wasn’t a Serb, but heaps of Serbs try to erase him being a CROATIAN Serb.

Tesla himself said he was proud of his Serb ethnicity and Croatian homeland. According to his nephew, a minister in the Croat Peasant Party-led Royal Yugoslav Government in Exile, Nikola thought of Croats and Serbs as the same people and yearned for returning to Yugoslavia after WW2.

He was a Croatian Serb. Aka a Serbian who lived in what is known today as Croatia.

Nationality: Austro-Hungarian Citizen – specifically under the Austrian part (1856-1891), United States Citizen (1891-1943) – the acquisition of US citizenship means he was no longer a citizen of Austro-Hungary or any successor state.

Ethnicity: Serbian (both parents Serbians, Dad orthodox priest).

So I don’t know how some of my Croatian brothers claim Tesla as a Croat when he was neither a citizen of Croatia or ethnically Croatian.

I know Croatia don’t accept people as Croats just because their born there – migrants and ethnic Serbs, but they accept Bosnian Croats and Croatians (even though they were born in Bosnia).

    16. AndyBlayaOverload on

Ethnic Serb, ethnically Serbian parents. Father was a Serbian Orthodox priest. Born in (then) Austro-Hungary, (present day) Croatia. Lived most of his life in America. Croats slaughtered pretty much all of his remaining family and relatives for being Serbian. He absolutely wasn’t Croatian in any shape or form and the audacity to claim he is, is mortifying after what Croats did to his entire bloodline.

    17. RevenueStill2872 on

Tesla was so tired of the pea-brained balkaners arguing whether he was this or that that he fled to become american.

    18. Yhaqtera on

People love to argue over whether Nikola Tesla was Serbian, Croatian, or Austrian meanwhile, the car named after him is unmistakably American.

    19. PenguinGerman on

“I am equally proud of my Serbian origin and my Croatian homeland.” He also acknowledged that if he were to achieve his ideals, it would be “on the behalf of the whole of humanity,” and that “it is a deed of a Serb”.

I feel it is only since the last decade or so that this debate is even a thing, the man himself even requested “Tamo daleko” to be played at his funeral.

    20. Bright_Software_5747 on

As someone of “Croatian Serb” descent just like Tesla I don’t understand the debate on this. We were never seen as Croatian by Croats not did we identify as such, other historical Serbs from Croatia are not seen as Croat with very few minor exceptions, no one would claim Momčilo Đujić to be a Croat (even though his ancestors were probably in Croatia longer than Teslas who were pretty recent migrants from BIH). But Tesla achieved a lot so all of these rules are thrown out of the window lmao.

Not to mention most of his relatives got killed by Ustaša for being SERBS, it’s not just dumb logic it’s insulting. Had Tesla been alive he’d have been persecuted just the same.

    21. I also have bday today! 🙂 and I am glad to share that date with such aspiring man.

    22. cjepidlaka on

If Tesla is Serbian inventor then Steve Jobs is Syrian inventor and businessman

    23. Suspicious_Iron7871 on

If it weren’t for Nikola Tesla, America might still be a backward land where people settle disputes with sticks and clubs.

No thing such as ethnic purity on our continent
