Thanks to global warming, people in the northern areas of Europe aren’t used to that heat wave, so they’re obviously going to be more sensitive

I mean, LARGE majority of the population doesn’t drink anywhere NEAR enough water, ever. That’s especially more important during heat.

would’ve been better to use the same city as the blue baseline. Imo.

Well duh, Europe has a ton more old people compared to the US. Because healthcare is a lot better, people survive to the age where they are vulnerable to extreme weather.

If majority of this deaths was retirement age people, it’s actually helping European economies.

It’s getting hot in here. So take off all your clothes.

There is multiple problems with that statistics and with such simplistic views:
– Are these cities even comparable? Like, do they have the same amount of heat days? Depending on where in Europe, there is week and month long heat waves where temperatures rise >35°C
– Large parts of europe get considerably hotter than the US. Europe has been the fastest warming continent due to climate change.
– Are old people also considered in this statistics? They are much more prone to heat related deaths.
– **Also:** Large adoption of AC = more climate emissions = hotter climate – and you’re also not helping ANY people who actually work outside during this hot weather which I think will probably amount to quitea considerable amount of heat deaths

Old people and air conditioning

Isn’t it more that Americans in those areas are more used to that heat? Does everyone especially the most vulnerable ones in LA really have air conditioning? That stuff is expensive and I always saw it as a luxury item. Although it’s true that for someone in the Bay area with local salaries that sum is probably like for me buying a new phone.

The figure seems misleading. It’s not the mortality vs temperature, it’s the relative increase in mortality. So it’s unclear if the mortality is overall lower in US cities, or if it’s higher but constant with respect to temperature

I have never, ever known anyone who died from heat.
I have seen and known deaths of all kinds and NEVER EVER DUE TO HEAT.

Two factors I guess:
1. Older population in Europe than NA
2. Less AC equipment in Europe than NA

What of the Americans who are shot in school and never reach the age to die as the result of extreme heat?

Did you just delete your previous post and republished it because your were called out for the bad data?
Because I’ve seen this graph posted already today by someone else who had an Ireland flair.
Showing graphs for a date period betwee 2000 and **2019**, while your data is from **2004** is peak cherrypicking.
This post is super misleading.

We still have an absolutely idiotic culture in Europe to not view heat as a hazard and to view any use of the AC as a ‘weakness.’
No, in the summer using the AC is not a ‘weakness’ let alone a ‘luxury’, it’s a necessity!
For a start, it should be in all hospitals, all public buildings, all forms of transport. It should especially be omnipresent in retirement homes, no matter how much someone complains of the cold. Better to be cold than dead.
We need a drastic re-adjustment on how we deal with exteme heat in Europe.

Sssssst. Haven’t you heard? Climate change doesn’t exist any more, because it’s WOKE.
And everyone is actually secretly happy with that, as it’s a fundamental right to emit 15% of the world’s average annual carbon emission per capita to lie next to a swimming pool on the Canary Islands for a few days. And to go on a Heavy Fuel Oil facilitated Cruise, because you’ve worked so hard for it. And to eat 75 kilo of meat per person because veggies is vegan and vegan is WOKE.
And then as soon as someone says something about it, you say: “what about China/India/etc”.
We’re living in the movie Don’t Look Up now. Let’s hope that the end of it will be as quick and swift as the end of the movie.
