I thought there’d be much more alevis… although perhaps that’s where the atheists mostly come from?

That’s a start. Like much of Europe, guessing that a lot of people report being Catholic or whatever but couldn’t care less. Of the people that report being religious, a fair number have probably had a drink a lot more they’ve been in a mosque.

Sultan Erdogan will be very angry about this

Erdogan will probably say that atheists don’t exist in Turkiye, just like he said that LGBT people don’t exist in Turkiye

In the early 2010s there were lots of fear among right wingers that the world will turn islamic due to Christians losing faith and declining fertility while Muslims were steadfast and having families. Turns out Muslim states were just a decade behind . Islamic countries not burdened by war or extreme poverty are all taking a sharp turn away from religion just as the West started to in last decade.

Contemporary surveys from Pew, KONDA and Optimar give different results. Mostly GenZ has tendencies of atheism. Nevertheless, atheism is not progressivism. Most of my atheist friends are still very hostile to LGBTQ+, extremely ultranationalistic, etc.
I think being of a certain faith has slowly become more of a socio-cultural thing than a religious one, and that many more people in the world are either “passive” believers or outright don’t believe at all. I don’t know almost anyone who goes to church anymore, it feels like religion everywhere is on the decline.

Huh, I thought there would be many more irreligious people, especially with how much Attaturk and kemalism in general hoped to erradicate religion from public life entirely, way more than any european country.

This survey is for the young population of Turkey, limited to ages from 18 to 30. So you title is wrong.

Atheism/deism is likely way higher in reality. There are a lot that are Muslim just on paper. They’re either in denial about their crisis of faith or they’re unlikely to publicly admit their real beliefs, or they outright don’t care at all one way or the other.

Most of the non-Sunnis may not be truthful out loud. Religion is still a taboo in Turkey and you may get killed for it. See the [Sivas massacre ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sivas_massacre)and most recently [Leman incident](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/jul/01/istanbul-turkey-leman-magazine-alleged-prophet-muhammad-cartoon-protests-arrests).
