Ukrainian Border guards heard a blast near the state border. Later, they found the badly injured body of the horse near an abandoned forest trail — a place that had once been used by russian troops.

Przewalski’s horses are a rare and special species — the last truly wild horses on Earth. Over the years, they’ve managed to thrive in the Chornobyl zone, adapting to the wild environment and becoming a symbol of how nature can recover, even in places touched by disaster.

This tragic case is a reminder of the long-lasting dangers left behind by war. Even after russian forces have pulled back, landmines and unexploded devices continue to threaten both animals and people.

Przewalski’s horses were once nearly extinct, known mostly from zoos. The last wild ones were spotted in Mongolia decades ago. Thanks to conservation efforts, some herds were released into the wild, including into the Chornobyl Biosphere Reserve. Today, there are around 2,000 of them worldwide.

This isn’t the first time one has been killed by a mine. Just last May, border guards heard a similar explosion and discovered another wild horse had stepped on a device in an area that had also been occupied by russian forces early in the invasion.
