Anecdotal evidence from people in management at Siemens, where I used to work before finding a new large firm to work for, is that there is about a 60/40 split of vanishing semi-skilled computer jobs in this country being outsourced to South Asia, versus being downsized in the face of AI, yet AI gets all of the blame as a useful distraction from the new wave of outsourcing.
After all, if Reform comes into power and the narrative for the mass unemployment is all about AI (and foreigners/disabled/gypsies/anyone else they’d like to send to a camp), the retributive business policies will hit tech companies only, allowing the services firms doing most of the outsourcing to get off scot free.
