Ridiculous sentence. People who molest kids get less.

They will actually only serve 20 months of the 51 month sentence. What a fucking joke.
OriginalZumbie on
I still have no idea why they did it, most crimes at least have some sort of motivation or reasoning however flawed or corrupt, this was just utterly pointless.
CraigKing42 on
Surprised their was no fines after the judge listed the damage costs in excess of £50,000
limeflavoured on
Of which they’ll serve 40%, which is 1 year 8 months. One of them has been on remand since before Christmas, so he’ll serve about a year from now.
Zerosix_K on
They only have to serve 40% of that 4 years though.
Don’t see how jail solves this or many other crimes. Putd a huge burden on the tax payer for no benefit.
I would much rather each of them is given 2,000 hours of community service.
JicamaIcy7621 on
Let’s not forget, they’ve cut down a tree. They didn’t stab anybody, they didn’t abuse any child, and they didn’t didn’t commit any theft. They cut down a f***ing tree.
People are losing their minds over one famous one, when millions get deforested every year. Animals lose habitats, 0 fucks given.
One gets chopped coz its been on tv. British outrage!

The more you see of the legal system, the more you realise what a sick joke it all is.
Getting reduced sentence for having no criminal history – surely someone having committed no serious crimes is what we should be setting as the normal standard in society. Not just something you get “good boy points” for.
Then the judge says the other guy did have a criminal history, but she wants to give them the same sentence, so his doesn’t count. Brilliant.
Sentences served concurrently – i.e. you face absolutely no punishment for this. It was a buy one get one free because you committed these crimes at the same time.
And then of course the best of all: “the prison sentence we actually give you is totally fake. You only serve 40% of this, at most, so 4 years is just to gaslight the public into thinking we actually punish people”
They’ve already served some time in prison, so they’ll be out in a year. Not 4 years. Absolute clown show.

Better than nothing I guess

It was a stupid thing to do but 4 years, really? Granted they’ll be out in about 1 and a half but still seems over the top IMO.
Also when they get to prison and they tell people they’ve been locked away for cutting a tree down, it’ll give a few prisoners a giggle to say the least!

I wonder if these guys will change their names when they get out. The tree huggers have very long memories!
Glittering_Copy8907 on
It’s about the right sentence for me – they’ll be out in 2 years at most, and stand a reasonable chance of being on tag after just over a year. I think for, fundmanetally cutting down a tree, that’s a harsh enough punishment for the crime.
What’s shocking, really, is that this sentence is so much worse than for many other arguably much worse crimes.
Sonchay on
Interestingly, so far, the roughly even split between people unhappy that this sentence is too long or too short.
For me, I think it’s spot on. The fact that the justice system is too soft on some violent offenders is its own issue to be fixed and irrelevant here.

Cool, can we do the couple that chopped down the protected tree in Shropshire next? (A twinned yew iirc but Google isn’t giving me much to work with) They never got into any trouble for it.

The people I have seen get really, expressively upset over the tragic felling of this ancient tree seem to end their care with their interest in this one tree
Would be nice if some of the outrage and passion translated to a commitment to do what they can to minimise their own contribution to the destruction of the planet

I heard there were tree fellars. How come only 2 of them were sentenced?

4 years for chopping down a tree is pretty silly. It was a nice tree, sure, but come on. Also, I could be wrong here, but at the time wasn’t there no legislation that takes into account non-monetary value for property destruction when determining a sentence to hand out? I think it’s changed now, because of this case, but a tree is hardly worth much money. Feels like a judge cowering to public outrage, as per usual. Grow a backbone. What benefit is it for these two losers to be in prison for 4 years, other than to make society feel better about itself?
Glittering-Pair2626 on
About time. Four years sounds harsh for a tree, but man… that tree was iconic. Good riddance.

It’s awful what they did but seems like grooming children gets a lighter sentence. What’s going on with Europe?

These are adults. If it was teenagers you could kind of understand it, we were all young once. But this pair of twats are grown adults. I dread to think what else they do to be irritating to others in their daily lives, because “funny”.

This sentence is harsh when you consider a man who lives near me, who spends time litter picking in our local nature reserve, was attacked by three violent thugs. He confronted them for riding quad bikes dangerously in an area for walkers, they severely beat him requiring hospitalisation. It was filmed on a mobile phone which the police had as evidence.
No action was taken against them, he was lucky he wasn’t killed, he nearly was. Where is the justice there? He is living with the consequences daily now, what are they doing, laughing all the way to their next drug deal.
Yes, this is a mindless act and needed punishing, but prison should first and foremost be for protecting the pubic from violent offenders and if they can be rehabilitated then great, but first and foremost keep them away from decent people. I’d say some of those white collar scammers who go after vulnerable people are much worse that these two.
Weird-Statistician on
I’m all for the prison sentence but they really should have added a significant community order to the end of it. Planting a few thousand trees to start to make up for it, for example. At the end of all this, we’re down 1 tree and a few hundred grand in prison costs.

A not-at-all outlandish sentence given the [guidelines for criminal damage](https://www.sentencingcouncil.org.uk/offences/magistrates-court/item/criminal-damage-other-than-by-fire-value-exceeding-5000-racially-or-religiously-aggravated-criminal-damage/), their near-complete lack of mitigating factors and litany of aggravating factors – but I’m sure plenty of highly opinionated and legally uneducated redditors will swiftly start comparing it in bad faith to completely unrelated cases.

Should have just [kicked someone to death over drugs](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c628ekyw0x1o) and they would have got a year less. Pathetic “justice” system.
