      >In Italy, 64% favour Scotland being allowed to join, with 11% against, broadly similar to **Spain** – where 65% said they would support an independent Scotland in the EU while 13% are opposed to this.

For some reason though, every Spanish politician that has ever existed always falls under the 13% camp, not the 65%. I wonder why!!!

I think it’s far to say most people in the UK, outside of Scotland, don’t fight against the idea.

It’s their choice, and so far they’ve chosen to stay.

Now… lots of people think it would be beyond a disaster for them! in the style of Brexit as it were… But it’s their choice to make that mistake.

      Interesting survey.
Only I did not understand why they were asked the British , and not only the Scots.

And as I understand it , the UK government in the near future against a referendum on Scottish independence.

Well, I would like to know from the Scots themselves , what the results of the survey on independence in Scotland itself.

If Scotland were to become an independent state and wanted to join the EU, of course I would support that. But I think it’s a theoretical discussion. London won’t allow a new referendum anytime soon, and when I look at the polls in Scotland, it seems that the public isn’t particularly enthusiastic about the idea yet.

As a Scot, like the majority of Scottish voters who voted against Brexit, feeling awful pessimistic about this.

Westminster always held a veto over Scottish Independence, and are unlikely to grant another in the short to long term.

It’s sad to be shackled to the Reform fuelled politics of England but what can we do?

Are we still doing this shit?

Scotland leaving the UK would destroy Scotland it’s that simple.

    7. haphazard_chore on

This is effectively a hostile act. The mere discussion with Scottish leaders should be considered treason.

Seeing any part of the current UK back in the EU would be nice.

UK as a whole being here would be awesome.

    9. chessboardtable on

Why wouldn’t they support it? It would be a very rich country. Although I think that partitioning the UK would be wrong.

    10. Equivalent-Role4632 on

I think for most of us Europeans we think of Scotland as it’s own country same as Ireland so them being under British rule is surprising to us.

    11. An independent scotland would be an act of self-harm similar to brexit.

    12. NorthSwim8340 on

For now it’s a political fiction: of course Scotland is close to the EU and viceversa, but creating tensions with it’s biggest neighbor and trade partner over some discontent is not worth it. Unless England does something really stupid that will make Scotland seriously reconsider the union, this article it’s just sensationalism

Those are strange times, when France and the Kanaks just signed a conclusive agreement to “Scottlandize” Nouvelle-Calédonie (becoming a nation *inside of France*), and meanwhile the British commenters here are acting all Parisian towards Scottland (“the mere thought would be treason”)

Don’t worry, British friends, Madrid and Paris could be capable to refuse to integrate Scottland in the EU. They would be terrorized Catalonia, Corsica, Euskadi, and Britanny are next !

    14. Independent-Day-9170 on

      Of course.

The English have a fantasy that Spain or the Netherlands would block Scotland from joining. No, they wouldn’t.

(But Hungary or Slovakia might, depending on if Putin is more interested in weakening the UK by splitting off Scotland than he is in splintering the EU.)

    15. Apprehensive-Bid-740 on

Of course The EU could fund a totally poor country when independent.

Scotland feels like a Nordic country. Not sure why they want to tie themselves to the chaos south of their border.

    17. Delicious_Ad9844 on

Although I’d doubt Scottish independence is on the cards for a while now, for myriad reasons, but the oppressiveneds and backwards attitudes of English people, but also for defence and the government has invested a considerable amount of money into electricity in Scotland due to lacking space in England

Isn’t mostly russian propaganda that continuously support Scotland independence ?

    19. Prudent-Pool5474 on

Oh christ. Again. As an Englishman, I’m all for their independence. But this view ignores reality. Scotland leaving the UK wouldn’t just be difficult but it would be devastating to them.

They run one of the highest deficits in Europe and funded massively by English taxpayers. The Barnett formula props up their public services. There’s no currency plan, no central bank and oil revenues is shaky to say the least. Then they’d be border complicationd. Independence means losing that financial support and subsidies overnight. The result would be brutal cuts, economic instability, market instability, capital flight and long term damage to jobs, services and investment. And a potential public service collapse unless taxes skyrocket.

And the narrative that Scotland was a victim of the British Empire doesn’t stick. Scots played a major role in building and running that empire. They weren’t subjects, they were architects of it, partners. Scottish generals, governors, and.. slave traders, oh yes. Deeply involved.

If Scotland wants to go its own way, that’s their right 100%, I think all 4 nations in the UK should be independent. But it’ll be a leap into a financial crisis without a single doubt.

OP, with all respect, the Independant is owned by Evgeny Lebedev, who is the son of a Russian oligarch and a KGB agent.

Too much to write about him, but he comes up frequently in the Private Eye, which probably says enough for anyone familiar with it.
