How are 5 year olds being classified as being in need of special educational needs? It takes years to confirm some of these diagnosis. They’re not even in school until 4. Could it be that people are pushing for diagnosis early on in order to get financial support, such as PIP?

Edit: I know of 3 single parents that have pushed for ADHD and autism diagnosis specifically because they want the extra payments and carer support component of UC. It’s not my imagination it’s most definitely a thing!

Just going back to the headline for a moment… let’s take it apart: 5 year olds with special educational needs are 20 months behind peers…

yes, they have special needs, so they are behind. If they were not ‘behind then they wouldn’t have spacial needs.

At 5 years old they are 20 months behind – i.e they are only educationally as capable as a 3 year old. At this age, the variables between 3 and 5 are massive… there are snappy 3 year olds and slow 6 year olds. Each person is an individual. They should not be measured on such a strict metric at this age.

The question is, should we be expecting all kids to be cookie cutter replicas? They are not.
