      I’d be ok with this.

I live out of town. Makes no sense a postman driving out to us every day to deliver 1 letter.

Once a week would be loads.

Urgent parcels could be collected at the local depot if needed.

Big focus on An Post’s supposed next day service and how they may have to change it. What a pile of crap – I send a lot (parcels and large letters) and they have not operated an effective next day service since Covid. Most stuff takes two days, some more, and maybe 20% is next day. Didn’t stop them using ‘next day’s as an excuse to raise their prices again recently though….

      >while profits were up, there was an “inexorable decline” in overall mail numbers.

      >Profits after exceptional items stood at €5.6m, up from a €20m loss in 2023, on the back of first-ever revenues of €1bn.

So profits are up but they want to cut back the service they provide? How about no?

Traditional postal service is dying and an every day service is expensive. I’d prefer to see them profitable and keeping people in jobs.

Cutting back on service that is getting more popular each day? Like people doing online shopping? Ye, that makes sense…

Our state services don’t need to run for profit, they are services for the public. They should deliver value for money which is often not aligned to making a profit.

I think An Post shouldn’t be a for profit business. They should be a state service. If they continue, the likes of Amazon will happily operate at a loss for enough years to squeeze them out. Then not only will they gouge the fuck out of us once they have the market share, but also not hire permanent employees and operate a gig economy.

Mail volumes fall but somehow still takes weeks to get through the system? Something isn’t adding up
