HMRC is about income and other transactional taxes in the UK. They are not implementing a wealth tax based on knowing the global assets of people.

Oh, they know. They also know that revealing the figure would start riots.

There’s only about 150–doesn’t say much for the HMRC.
Oh, but of course they spend all their time investigating benefit “fraud”…
Glad they have their priorities straight!

Income is not wealth, as other comments have said.
That being said there is infrastructure for funds held in bank accounts, i haven’t checked where that’s at lately.
Then there will be things like stakes in companies, shares, etc. Which i imagine is probably held in some archaic system somewhere which would need significant work.

So HMRC is focusing on its core job (collecting taxes and duties) rather than collating statistics…next!

They pay taxes in the UK everytime they spend money here, they just aren’t likely to be paying income tax because they will have bank accounts and income in a whole slew of different countries.

They could figure it out very quickly though. They don’t want to publish that data as it would show why tax receipts went up by such a small amount this year. The wealth is leaving the country we will suffer as a result.

Of course, far easier to go after all the PAYE employees as they are easier to tax than those elusive billionaires with wealth and income buried deep in overseas interests.
