A farmer spends their whole life working, paying PRSI for their pension and then ends up they have to choose to give up their pension if they want to keep the subsidy which is the only reason food prices are any way affordable.
I suppose they have to pay for their tanks and guns somehow!!
The CAP is basically the reason why nearly every agri family supports the EU.

So they can’t get a retirement pension while also getting grants for being an active farmer?

I do think Ireland needs to support our farms for food security and our agriculture sector is one of the few that’s fully domestic (as of writing)
The worst outcome is it’s left to seed and or taken over by MNCs who will strip it out and reduce our societies self sufficiency and of course our own trade portfolio
(Of course we also need to reform how we do our farming as well)

I love the farming lobby groups wheel out these small farmers every time there is talk about reducing payments.
But anyone remember a few years ago when the same farmers tried to take action against the meat factory’s. They tried to strike and picket the factory’s. 0 support from the farming lobby. I think they suggested that farmers should protest outside the retailers instead to fight for increase prices for factory’s. lol
From the bits and pieces I have read, cap reforms have 2 main goals. Reward environment protection more and redistribute payment more fairly.

Op. I take from this article that if the farm is being actively farmed by the farmer then they get the pension and the subs. But they can’t get any grants at all if on a pension and farm is not being farmed to its capacity. Or am I wrong
