And the government is currently hard at work to make it go even lower

    2. Responsible-Tea4284 on

Well, on one hand it’s a normal phenomenon in industrialized countries that the birth rate is declining. But it also has to be said that we currently have a government that cares more about the well-being of big corporate bosses than about that of families and children.

Isn’t it the same thing “everywhere”?

Not only the male fertility is collapsing globally, thanks to all the shit we eat and breath, but who the hell in the EU would want to have 2-3 kids right now.

You’d have to be absolutely mental.

Best I can do is 1,take it or leave it.

Funny how the birth rates started falling as soon as housing and living wages became an unreachable dream for the majority.

It was such a brilliant idea to build the world on ever growing and infinitely expanding population model! So brilliant! So flawless!

I bet, futurists pictured us standing on each other’s heads by 2500 with 13578843 billions working people paying taxes to provide for pensions… but long before we could enjoy our personal 0,5m2 of land, we bailed out.

Mean humans don’t want to reproduce like viruses for the sake of the growth we invented anymore! Ungrateful demand comfort and quality of life! They even prefer free walking chicken eggs!..

For the ruling politicians and big corpos it doesn’t matter who pays the tax or who buys the product. For a big corporation it’s the same when many migrants buy inexpensive products vs few locals buy expensive products, at the end of the day it’s the same amount of income. So what these fuckers will continue doing is instead of improving the quality of life of locals they will just immigrate alot of people working for less than livable wage (using them because they don’t have any better choice). The 1% of rich people will continue to live in the luxuries while all of the rest will be de facto slaves with the only difference being the fact that they can choose their owner. I fantasized now a bit but you get the idea.

Everything is going as intended, there are no flaws in policies.

Will only get worse with this government. Pay 50+% of your salary, see the pensions increasing but not your own wage, can’t afford enough space to have kids, get bullied cause old people hate kids (and overly love their own grand kids), no space in the kindergarten, school constantly canceled cause they refuse to hire more teachers, … what did I miss?

    9. German government: you know what, I will get more immigrants which something German citizens are against it.

Buying a home is unaffordable for everyone except top earners or people who inherit. Kindergarden is stupidly expensive in some places. Taxes are very high and they are actively reducing support for young families except for those that fully rely on the welfare state. At the same time, they are increasing pensions for boomers, which the young generations have to fund as well. I see no reason to be surprised about the fact that the birth rates are so low.

    11. StrangerConscious637 on

I see no problem here…. less people on earth… less pollution…. more space.

      >For women with German citizenship, it dropped to 1.23, the lowest since the 1996 rate of 1.22.

Can’t recall that there was so much discussion about falling birth rates in the 1990s, but I was maybe too young.

    13. Bob_Spud on

Apparently all this reporting about falling birthrates throughout the world can be attributed to the substantial increase in people not forming stable relationships.

[The relationship recession is going global](https://www.removepaywall.com/search?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ft.com%2Fcontent%2F43e2b4f6-5ab7-4c47-b9fd-d611c36dad74) there’s more stuff on the internet like this.

The increase in the number single people is what is causing it.

      Original [https://www.ft.com/content/43e2b4f6-5ab7-4c47-b9fd-d611c36dad74](https://www.ft.com/content/43e2b4f6-5ab7-4c47-b9fd-d611c36dad74) (paywalled)

In the FT report it says the number of children in families hasn’t changed much since the 1900s, in the US it has actually increased.

    14. ibmi_not_as400_kerim on

Don’t worry. Young people are going to have to pay more for social contributions soon, I’m sure that’ll fix it.

    15. OliveCompetitive3002 on

No problem for our politicians. We just import millions of people from anywhere and everything is fine. At least for them and the ultra wealthy elites that rule this country and half of Europe.

    16. Order_99 on

Well, wouldn’t you know having kids is expensive, existence in and of itself is expensive. Why make kids when they’ll just suffer along when you struggle to live? If you’re comfortable money wise, go ahead, the creation of life is beautiful if you can take care of it afterwards.

    17. Nah, it’s the parents fault. They’re the ones unable to put 8h work a day, 1-2h commute, and the energy needed to raise kids. Parents, just get better ffs /s

    18. Stiller_Winter on

Baby-boom system “woman at home, man has a job” doesn’t work anymore for many social economic reasons. Rent and mortgage are very expensive. The baby care system is terrible and outdated. CDU and SPD have not done anything against it for at least 30 years. Additionally, the German export hasn’t grown for 3 years, and the situation on the job market is getting worse. Why young people are not in the mood to make kids. Strange.

    19. Lol. My colleague who moved to Germany 2 months ago just complained about how bad being the middle class in Germany is compared to Sweden (he lived there before). The income tax is disheartening, there is nothing left in the end of the day for a small family with one kid and wife not working in this economy. He couldnt put the kid in a piano lesson. And also he said that he is paying for the other kids to get the education (in term of tax which i disagree). Meanwhile for jobless or low income families, everything is easier.

I dont have kids myself. We are actually DINK (double income no kid). And it is even hard for us. So i cant imagine if there is only one bread winner in one household.

And in my case, among my colleagues who have 3 newborns this year. But all of them are foreigners.

    20. LayLillyLay on

This is why we need open borders and more interculteral relationships.

    21. Life_Show8246 on

The result of uncontrolled capitalism. God I hate boomers who just completely annihilated Europe, why the fuck couldn’t they just have turned harder to the left financially instead of just hoarding all the fucking money and assets for themselves like fucking dragons on piles of gold? And now most of those fucking assets are probably gonna be fucking swallowed up by companies as well, god damn it!

Better to be Norway than Bangladesh in age of AI/Automation

    23. My idea is that we can’t even give our children the lifestyle we had and we would like them to live a little better than us, otherwise it’s useless.

    24. SPD and CDU: maybe we should increase pensions and decrease net income

    25. build more apartments for young families to live in, create more better paying jobs, and older generations should give up their large, inexpensive apartments that they are not fully using for young families (not going to happen).

    26. MartinYTCZ on

Not that surprising. People born in the 90s would usually be having children by now, and since the reproductive rate was very low, it is again very low.

This can be seen all across Central Europe (and possibly elsewhere too). Demographics have a ripple effect, and this is exactly that.

    27. theWireFan1983 on

Politicians will use this as an excuse to flood the country with more immigrants

    28. digiorno on

And yet they voted for neoliberal party which will absolutely continue the neoliberal economic policies that have helped make housing expensive, helped consolidate money with the rich and helped stagnant wages for the poor.

    29. Plenty of immigrants for them to take and increase the birth rate

    30. ConsiderationSad6271 on

We did our part, and we aren’t even German. Germany should do the right thing and give incentive to those born in the country.
