Breendonk held different types of prisoners. Those who were arrested and detained for interrogation—typically resistance fighters—were placed in isolation cells: small, cramped, dark spaces measuring barely 1.5 by 2 meters, with only a wooden plank to sleep on.

Prisoners were forced to stand upright all day. The wooden plank was folded up during the day by the guards. Sitting or leaning against the walls was forbidden. Anyone not standing properly in line risked being beaten.

Often, the only reason to leave the cell was for a short walk to the torture room. Interrogations there were brutal: several prisoners did not survive them.

Interrogations frequently took place at night. The cries of those being tortured echoed through the dark corridors of the Fort—a grim warning to the other prisoners trying to sleep in their rooms.

Really recommended to visit. Isn’t far from Mechelen. Makes you realize all those horrors aren’t that long ago.
