won the fighting spirit award (I think for the second time?) last time and got promoted to Maegashira #1 (highest ranking below the “champion” ranks, effectively top 10 in the world)

that said, Hoshoryu has been dealing with injuries over the last 3 basho since he got promoted to Yokozuna, and withdrew from the basho after aggravating an injury he had been dealing with all week in his match against Aonishiki.

the kid is great and looks set to move up again after this basho, but the Yokozuna was not at his best in that match.

Aonishiki also looked like he might have injured his leg in the day 5 match (which he also won against a higher rated opponent), I hope not, but he was keeping weight off one of his legs after getting up from the winning move.
