Didn’t know most of these countries had a space program. Quite a surprising list

Only two countries were not socialist

besides (1) and (2), did any of the rest ACTUALLY send their own rocket into space, or just piggyback off of ussr/usa?

Nationals as guests, maybe.
In reality, after the USSR and the USA, only China has ever managed to send humans at space..

Most of the countries were there due to a “friendship” with USSR. Poland has no space program and sent 2nd ever guy into space just 2 or 3 weeks ago.

Alan Shepard didn’t reach orbit in 1961.

It really sucks that because of politics Yuri Gagarin is not really recognized in the west. I feel like we should have more respect for him tbh.

Quite interesting that most of these people came from communist countries…

First Countries in Space. List of one. USSR. (as in: “First Country”) Clearly bad usage of English for the concept displayed.
Countries First in Space. That’s better. Now you can create a list (as above)

Out of the first five only US and Poland still exist, and it’s worryingly starting to look like US might be next to go.

The United States may have been 2nd to space, but we’re first in citizens who believe that was just a hoax.

I’m begging you… these Remeks, Hermaszewskis, Farkases, and Tuans were nothing more than passengers on the USSR taxi. It was all just for show, to prove how great the Soviet bloc supposedly was.

So the US wasn’t near as friendly as as the USSR (of all places) and didn’t invite any friends up there with them?

Might as well list out the US states each astronaut came from

So what you’re saying is Czechoslovakia was 3rd strongest country in the world.
Jk

I can’t get over the name of the first French astronaut which literally translates to Jean-Wolf Christian. Love it

Honestly, bad list. What determines if a nation can reach space is if they can launch when they want, not if they were offered a ride by someone else. As much as it hurts my European pride to say it, only the Soviets, Americans and Chinese deserve to be on this list. Indians soon probably.

LOL, LMAO even. What the fuck is this propaganda garbage? Most of those “countries” did no such thing – they used Soviet aka Russian space missions. For the example the Vladimir Remek flew on https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soyuz_28 and Miroslaw flew on https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soyuz_30.
Alan B Shepard’s Mercury/ Redstone flight (Freedom 7) was sub-orbital. John Glenn was the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth.
ČESKOOOOO
Cuba, Vietnam and Mongolia being in space is weirder than Poland.
France could develop nuclear weapons independently but TIL they couldn’t independently send a man to space
If we go by cosmonauts whose countries of origin would later become independent, a few would jump in front of Czechoslovakia:
Pavel Popovich, first Ukrainian in space and 8th overall, 12th of August 1962
Pyotr Klimuk, first Belarusian, 70th overall, 18th of December 1973
Was a bit surprised a whole decade has passed before there was a Belarusian in space
France sent the first humans in a hot air balloon. That’s space, just on a relatively lower orbit. Checkmate, Cold War superpowers !
USA first orbital flight was 1962.
Alan Shepard was suborbital.
Crazy how only the first is ever remembered
