    1. I’ve never heard of this one it might be some kinda pickpocket thing

    2. You pick it up to give it to them, then they act all grateful and offer you their services as a thank you, then they ask for money in return of the service acting like they didnt offer you anything

You give them the brush, they say they will shine your shoes as a thank you because without you they’d be unable to work! As they’re shining away they’ll either add an ‘expensive protection cream’ or tell you a sob story and try to guilt trip you into paying.

Just did a quick search and apparently after you give them their brush trying to be kind, they offer you to shine your shoe for free as a thank you but then ask for money after they are done cleaning.

Beyond this scam, there are many other interesting scams you might encounter in Istanbul. The beggars who pretend to be sick or to be sick themselves on the Marmaray, the bucket-carrying scammers on the Galata Bridge, the musicians in Taksim’s Asmalımescit, the rose sellers on the Kadıköy Pier, and the famous Kadıköy man who throws himself on the ground and pretends to be sick. It’s crucial for those visiting Istanbul to beware of these scams.
