I am fully aware people don’t wash their hands in pubs, bars, cinemas and workplace toilets. The former two frequently serve food.

Wait till we find out the amount of people who don’t shake or wipe afterwards

I don’t get how people can be so lax about hand washing and not feel completely disgusting. Especially in a hospital where there are lots of ill people.

To the best of my knowledge, this paper has not been peer-reviewed. I only have one reference from an online source that states the hospital where the hand sensors were placed was located in Denmark, not the UK.
The lead author on this project appears to work at the University of Surrey, and this was a collaboration with a group in Denmark.

Always wash my hands and carry a sml bottle of antibacterial gel to use after using public toilets.

I’d say the percentage is far greater. It’s grim seeing how few people actually take the time to wash and dry their hands in public, in restaurants, schools, etc.

I imagine around 80% of people don’t wash their hands after they pee.
People only do it in public not to be shamed.
I’ll die on that hill lol
In a hospital though, that’s wild.

Surprised it’s not greater than 50%. People are nasty. The amount of times I see people walk out public restrooms without washing their hands is wild. I don’t know how anyone is ok with being this disgusting.

Every time I go anywhere near a hospital I’m washing my hands a lot more. How people can not do it at all baffles me.

I prefer to wash my hands in an environment that is sanitary. Ergo not in the toilets.

Most of the Western world uses toilet paper to wipe their bottoms and simply smears the faeces around. Handwashing is hardly their biggest concern.

Yes. I would rather use hand gel than touch anything in any public toilet (especially taps). Combine that with lots of people in hospital being ill …

It’s disgusting. I use to work at a food factory that did oats and one day some bacteria had been found in the oatsand this type of bacteria can only be found in your arse so they deemed that this person had been the toilet and not washed there hands then gone back to work . It cost the company just over 60k in fines plus the loss of the cost of oats

The amount of blokes I’ve seen after a piss or even worse a shit and then just walking out is scary. I would like to think they have a bottle of hand gel to use after using the door but probably unlikely for most.

This is why I wash my hands constantly & carry hand sanitiser… some people are lazy & disgusting.

I remember a few years ago there was that huge furore around almost half – or maybe it was a third- of people in the UK not washing their legs in the shower.
So this wouldn’t surprise me at all.
I’m so paranoid about germs when I’m in hospitals. I can’t imagine not taking hygiene even more seriously when in one.

When my daughter was in hospital last year for a whole month, I washed and sanitised my hands every couple of hours anyway and always always if I’d been to the toilet or even left the room, it’s not hard!!

I think it’s something I had never paid attention to pre pandemic but I work jn a university so there are loads of people coming and going, I’m always shocked how many people don’t wash their hands after going to the toilet. The fact that people in hospitals don’t is even worse

I can believe it. Remember that plenty of people visit hospitals, so if they do not wash their hands anywhere else, they will not do it in a hospital. It is why winter vomiting bugs spread so well in them. Every year without fail, wards get locked down at work because some idiot comes in to see a relative having had norovirus recently and spreads it because they have not washed their hands properly. COVID showed that the average person has no understanding of personal hygeine.

I assist people to and from, and in the toilet every single day. I have to direct 90%+ of patients to the sink.
They can’t see the germs so don’t think they’re real.

I used to work at an optician. Many staff, including dispensing opticians, didn’t wash their hands. Even during and after COVID. Gross!

Last time I was admitted to hospital, there was a pile of shitty toilet paper in the corner of the men’s toilets that was left there for at least 2 days before it was cleaned up.

What’s insane is that even if you wash your hands you have to pull the door on the way out. I’ve never understood that. I thought all doors should be pull to enter and push to exit as that’s the safest for fire etc. why are toilets (and many other situations) design alternatively?

I used to work in IT at a good-grade paper mill. Had to fix someone’s PC, there’s hand sanitizer at every single door. Used it on the way into the room and while I was typing away, the user asked me why I put the hand sanitizer on. I said it’s hygienic and that it’s important because we’re in a food-grade materials factory. She said she didn’t even wash her hands after going to the loo.
I have never wanted to burn a keyboard and my hands more than I wanted to in that moment.
Edit to add: I’d also had the unfortunate experience of being in a cubicle in the same factory, hearing someone have the galloping trots, then walk out without flushing or washing their hands .
