      Ye, I doubt it costs that much extra to heat it…

      Unless they are using an X-ray machine or some laser?

      There’s VAT on the hot sandwich but not on the cold one, even if it’s the same sandwich.

      Part of this extra cost will be VAT that needs to be applied to hot food. Most places just absorb the cost in the normal pricing however. Wouldn’t expect anything less from Fresh.

      I haven’t really noticed it in other deli counters, but then again Fresh is a very expensive, [Dublin-only](https://freshthegoodfoodmarket.ie/locations/) convenience shop so I wouldn’t be surprised to see something that’s a minor cost / staff inconvenience being charged for there.

      I think anything that minimises staff time constraints and maximises money in is better business, but that obviously has to be balanced about people buying less or going elsewhere.

      It’s the VAT rate. But also fun story, when I worked in a cafe in 2013, there was no VAT charged on cakes that were being taken away. Also ice cream is considered a luxury item. Presume there have been some changes since then but always stuck in my mind.

      They’re actually absorbing some of the cost.

      It should be €7.66 plus whatever the toasting costs.

      The only reason to heat up the Italian-style one is the bread being stale.

      Makes no sense otherwise.

      It’s to do with VAT. Same thing in the UK – hot food has 13.5% vat added onto it.
      It’s why Greggs stopped offering ‘hot’ sausage rolls – they’re not longer kept in a heated unit.

      Can we also note that chicken mayo, with a bit of cucumber and salad is apparently almost the same price as a foccacia with multiple salamis, prosciutto, cheese and MORE veg?

      Seems…off.

      Yes it’s far better for business to sell you the cold sandwich, you tap your card and your on your way. That exchange takes like 10 seconds and they can then serve the next customer. If you request it hot, they have to heat it up for you and tie up staff to a certain extent in monitoring and operating the heating up. I think it’s a bit much tbh but I can see why a business would prefer you to have a cold sandwich
